Nathan needed help to the bathroom, leaning all his weight on me like he
had no bones.
At mealtimes, he would whine about not having strength and make me feed him bite by bite.
At night, he insisted we sleep together–his bed became our bed, and the companion bed was forgotten.
Our days were sweet and peaceful. He never brought up that incident again, and I didn’t press him either.
“Honestly, I was fine with just enjoying the calm while it lasted. But sweet days couldn’t stop unwanted guests.”
One afternoon, I told Nathan I wanted to go out for a dessert. Surprisingly, he didn’t stop me.
He even asked me to go to a different mall to pick up something for him.
I didn’t think much of it as it was only a 30–minute drive anyway.
Worried he would nag if I came back late, I even cut my own dessert
break short.
I planned to be gone for three hours, but managed to get it all done in
Two.
When I came back, though, I walked right into a nightmare.
Davin was standing outside the ward, and through the window I saw Genevieve sitting at the foot of his bed, with Nathan smiling at her.

My heart instantly froze. It turned out that he sent me out to buy things because Genevieve was coming over.
Davin looked panicked when he saw me, but I couldn’t be bothered. I walked straight in.
I wasn’t going to bottle everything up and bear the hurt alone anymore.
In the end, losing someone didn’t really change anything. Life still had to go on as usual.
Everyone was here now, so it was time to settle this once and for all.
I steeled myself–ready to fight–only to freeze at the sight of Genevieve’s tear–streaked face.
Nathan didn’t even look surprised to see me. He just kept his gaze on her and said coldly, “You’ve got your own contacts now. Ask them for help. Why are you bothering me?
“You love making things up, don’t you? I haven’t even started holding you accountable for all your rumors. And now you show up here?”
His tone was friendly, but the words were razor–sharp, making the ward feel icy.
Genevieve dropped to her knees, a mess of tangled hair and trembling limbs.
“Nathan, I’m sorry! Please… we’ve been family for over 20 years. Can’t you let this go?”
