My phone vibrated so violently it started to match my heartbeat, and the person on the other end was panicking.
“Ms. Joyner, Nathan just got into a car accident. Can you come back?!” I thought this might be some crude scam.
I had already thought it through–if he dared to lie to me about something like this, I would definitely slap him twice.
Force him to break up with me, then leave without looking back.
But on the way to the airport, his parents called too.
“Adeline, we’re begging you. If Nathan really did something wrong, we definitely won’t let him off the hook once he recovers, but when they wheeled him into the operating room, he kept calling your name… There was so much blood, we’re really scared…”

When I first left, those few hours of flight time felt way too fast.
