Chapter 7
By 6:30 that evening, Dante was waiting at the entrance of Emberwood Resort.
Guests arrived one after another. Most were friends of his and Evelyn’s, along with members of the
pack.
But Evelyn was nowhere to be seen.
Dante pulled out his phone and dialed her number.
A cold, automated voice responded: “The number you have dialed is powered off.”
Dante’s brows furrowed deeply, a sense of dread rising in his chest.
Evelyn… could she be angry enough to skip her own birthday party?
Gripping his phone tightly, Dante tried to recall the events from earlier that day.
At lunch, he’d received Natalia’s bleeding message and had rushed her to the hospital, leaving Evelyn behind.
The pack doctor said the bleeding was due to emotional distress and urged him to be more attentive
to Natalia’s mood.
Today is Evelyn’s birthday. Dante originally planned to admit Natalia to the hospital and then head. back to be with Evelyn, but once they were in the hospital room, Natalia clung to him and refused to
let go.
She placed his hand over her belly and said sweetly:
“The baby wants Daddy to stay. Keep us company, won’t you?”
Dante’s expression darkened. He refused her gently.
“No. Today is Evelyn’s birthday. I’m spending time with her.”
But just as he turned to leave, Natalia curled up on the bed, groaning in pain.
In the end, Dante caved. He stayed with her all afternoon.
It wasn’t until just before the party that he managed to coax Natalia into letting him go by
promising her a surprise later that evening.

But when Dante rushed over to Emberwood Resort, he realized he couldn’t get in touch with Evelyn.
“Why is your phone off, Evelyn?” he muttered anxiously, redialing again and again. The line was
still off.
Ophelia had been waiting quietly nearby.
She glanced at the time and stepped forward, holding a gift box labeled “Second Mating Gift“.
“Dante, Luna prepared two surprises for you tonight. Would you like to open this one now?”
Dante took the box eagerly.
But when he saw the words Second Mating Gift printed on it, his expression darkened, his voice turning cold.
“Why does it say ‘Second Mating Gift‘? Did you grab the wrong box?”
Ophelia looked him in the eye and shook her head.
“No, Dante. This is the one Luna asked me to give you.”
A terrible premonition seized him.
He pushed the box back into her hands and took a few steps back, as if the box were a ticking time
bomb.
Then, he mind linked the maids back at the pack house.
“Has Evelyn left yet? Send someone to bring her to the birthday party.”
The maid answered cautiously:
“Alpha, Luna left six hours ago with a suitcase.”
Dante’s heart gave a violent lurch. His pupils constricted as his heart began pounding wildly.
“What? Where did she go? Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
From the other end came the maid’s resigned voice:
“Before leaving, Luna said some parting words. She thanked us for our five years of service and gave each of us generous tips.”
“She specifically told us not to inform
you…

Dante felt a splitting headache. Something in his chest felt like it had been torn away, causing an
unbearable ache.
He wanted to rush back home, but the party was already underway. He couldn’t leave now.
“Go to the master bedroom. Check the top left drawer of the nightstand. See if Evelyn’s documents
are still there.”
The maid went upstairs and checked the drawer.
After a moment, she reported nervously: “Alpha, only your documents are here. Luna’s passport and driver’s license are gone.”
“Oh, and right after you left at noon, Luna had all her things packed up and moved out. From what she said, she wants to donate these to the werewolf orphanage.”
Dante stood frozen for a few seconds. His eyes flickered with something like panic–maybe even
fear.
“Our mate is running,” his wolf, Dex, warned.
“No, she wouldn’t…”
“She took her documents. She moved out. She donated all her things. Don’t you get it yet?”
Could she really be leaving him… on her birthday? To start a new life?
“No. That’s impossible!”
Dante ended the mind link and immediately grabbed his phone, stubbornly sending Evelyn another message: “Evelyn, didn’t we agree to celebrate together? Please don’t be mad. Where are you? I’ll come get you.”
As soon as he hit send, a red exclamation mark popped up on the screen.
Evelyn had blocked him.
Dante stared at his phone, stunned. He tried again: “Evelyn?”
The chat window once again reminded him–he’d been blocked.
Ophelia remained nearby, watching him quietly.
She stepped forward and offered the Second Mating Gift once more.
