Mason grabbed my arm, his voice heavy with fatigue he didn’t even recognize.
“Riley, get it together. If you leave now, you walk away with nothing.”
I nodded calmly. “Fine.”
This only enraged him further. His entire body tensed with anger.
“It’s just taking care of Elise! Will it kill you? You were plenty good at sucking up to my parents, right? When did you
become so unreasonable?”
“Three years ago, you promised you’d do anything to help me!”
I dug my nails into my palms, suppressing my emotions for several seconds before grabbing a glass from the table and smashing it to the floor.
“I take it all back!” I shouted. “Mason, I’m fucking DONE! Do you get that?!”
Mason had always had a temper. After his bankruptcy, the golden boy who had fallen from grace did nothing but
drink.
To help him pull himself together, I would hold him every night after work, telling him stories to keep the
nightmares away.
When debt collectors came, even when they threw chicken blood at me, I shielded him, promising that as long as he was Mason Reed, I would help him forever.
Even when Mason looked at me with disgust as I was covered in blood, I just said, “Thank goodness it didn’t get on
you.”
The glass shattered, fragments scattering across the floor. I could feel a burning pain in my calves.
At the same time, Elise clutched her belly and let out a delicate cry of pain.
Mason panicked immediately, his steps faltering.
Quick, get a doctor here!”
After a cursory examination revealed it was likely just shock, he let out a sigh of relief before turning his fury back
o me.
Riley, I don’t care what drama you’re creating. But Elise is pregnant–what if something happens to her?”
You know what you need to do, right?”

I let out a cold laugh.
“Of course I do.”
Just like last time when my project was inexplicably canceled, and I confronted Elise about it. She cried and said I
had scared her.
As a result, Mason made me take off my work uniform in front of everyone, apologize to her, and get out of the
building, out of his sight.
I bent down and zipped up my suitcase, then looked at Mason with complete indifference.
“I’ll get out of your way, far away, so I won’t bother you anymore.”
Seeing my detached expression, Mason’s eyes darkened.
“You think that’s enough?”
He turned to the staff. “Take Riley to the freezer room. Let her cool off and think about her behavior.”
