Chapter 9
It was not until 20 years later that I encountered Andreas again. But the moment I saw him, everything I used to feel–the butterflies and my pounding heart–was gone.
He had invested five billion dollars in my project.
Security had been tight, keeping out everyone who might want to assassinate me. However, no one expected Elaine, freshly released from prison, to sneak past them.
“You bitch, go to hell!” Elaine pulled out a knife and charged toward me, and the close distance made it impossible for me to escape.
Just when I thought I would die there, Andreas instinctively pulled me behind him, and the knife struck his heart directly, blood spreading across the floor.
“Isadora, I finally did something for you.” He gripped my hand and used his last strength to speak.“I’m willing to offer the entire Fitzgerald fortune as a wedding gift and fully support your experiments. So, Isadora, will you marry me?”
I thought he had truly lost his mind. At a time like this, he was still thinking about romance.
I rushed Andreas to the hospital as quickly as possible. At one point, the doctors said he couldn’t be saved. I sat by his bedside, gently wiping his fingers.
Two decades ago, when I loved him most, I vaguely remembered caring for him the same way. But he didn’t appreciate it back then, and the first thing he’d do upon waking was tell me to get lost.
But now, 20 years had passed, and Andreas seemed to have had all his sharp edges worn smooth.
Samuel told me that after I left, Andreas had established a foundation to provide funding for students who loved scientific research. Moreover, he had never returned to the Fitzgerald family home and moved all his belongings into the apartment I used to rent.
I found the key and opened the door, only to discover everything was still the same. The only difference was that the room was filled with Andreas‘ scent everywhere.
Standing by the window, looking at the building that belonged exclusively to the Fitzgerald Group, I realized my heart had become incredibly calm.
I cared for Andreas in the hospital for an entire month, and he was hanging on by the thinnest thread. Just when I was about to give up on him, he suddenly woke up.
I finally breathed a sigh of relief.
The first thing Andreas did upon waking was check if I was injured. Despite my protests, he insisted on personally confirming I had no wounds.
