Chapter 5
“Can you come over? I fell down at home and just need you to help me get to the car…”
Andreas immediately said over the phone, “Okay, I’ll be right there.”
I hadn’t planned on seeing him again, but after all these years of lab work, I realized I had no friends. Besides Andreas, I didn’t know who else to ask for help.
“Andy, are you going out? We have an appointment for wedding dress fittings in half an hour, so don’t go too far,” Elaine reminded him.
“Isadora, I-” Before he could finish, I hung up the phone.
Between Elaine and me, he would never choose me.
“What happened to you? When you were discharged last time, you were much better. It hasn’t been long, but now your wounds are badly infected.” the doctor said angrily as he examined my arm.
I lowered my head in embarrassment and mumbled, “I’m sorry.‘
It wasn’t on purpose. I didn’t ask to be burned with scalding water or stomped on with heels. Nonetheless, it didn’t matter because it would never happen again.
After the examination, he warned me, “Don’t let your hand get injured anymore, or it will never heal properly. Also, why do you always come alone? Where’s your family?”
The doctor sounded almost angry. I avoided his gaze, not knowing how to answer that question. After all, I no longer had any family.
I silently took my medication and left the hospital, heading straight to the car, where George was waiting to pick me up. The scenery outside kept changing as we drove past couples walking hand in hand and a daughter riding on her father’s shoulders, their laughter drifting into the car.
I fought back tears and turned to look inside the vehicle instead. I realized I would never have a father again, and I would never love someone so wholeheartedly again.
“Isadora, where are you going?”
