Chapter 57
“Ed, shall we continue what we left unfinished just now…?”
***
Stepping out of the Kuntz Group building, Kaneeta took a deep
breath.
She felt as if even the air had become fresher.
The day after tomorrow would be the fifteenth, the day she was
to return to Roseburn.
The thought of going back to Roseburn inevitably brought
Woodrow to her mind.
She hadn’t been in touch with Woodrow these past few days.
But the day after tomorrow, she would be taking Woodrow’s
private jet back to Roseburn together with him.
She wanted to keep her distance from Woodrow, but since they
had already agreed on this before, it would be unreasonable to
suddenly back out now.
She tried to convince herself that it was nothing–after all, even
Chapter 57
without the engagement, the Drayton family and the Hartwell
family would still have plenty of business dealings ahead, and
Woodrow just happened to be returning to Roseburn the same
day. Catching a ride on his plane was perfectly normal, wasn’t
it?
That was exactly how she had thought about it at first.
But now, her mindset seemed to have shifted ever so slightly.
She couldn’t quite put her finger on what had changed.
Her train of thought was interrupted by the ringing of her
phone.
It was a call from Atticus.
“Atticus.”
“Neeta, you’ve resigned already, haven’t you?” Atticus asked
cheerfully.
“Yes, it’s all over now.” There was a note of relief in Kaneeta’s
voice.
“That’s great, that’s great!” Atticus was almost clapping with joy.
“Imagine, you–Ms. Drayton–working as someone’s secretary,
and for that brat, no less… Ah, never mind, it’s all in the past, let’s
Chapter 57
not talk about it! Just in time, I’m having a get–together today.
Want to come? Consider it a celebration for your escape from
misery!”
Kaneeta thought for a moment and said, “Alright.”
She was in a good mood today, so going out for some fun
sounded nice. Besides, if it was Atticus inviting her, it was
bound to be a proper gathering.
“I’ll come pick you up tonight, then.”
That evening, Atticus came to the residence to pick up Kaneeta
and took her to an upscale club.
Atticus’s gathering with his friends was in a VIP suite on the top
floor of the club. As the two entered, those already present
stood up to greet Atticus.
“Mr. Vance is here.”
“Atticus, we’ve been waiting for you.”
“Hey, and this is…?”
Atticus was just about to introduce Kaneeta as his niece when
suddenly, someone looked at Kaneeta in surprise and blurted
out, “Sister–in–law? What are you doing here? Where’s Ed, didn’t
Chapter 57
he come with you?”
Kaneeta frowned slightly.
She hadn’t expected to run into one of Edmund’s friends here.
The speaker was Felix Corbin, one of Edmund’s close friends.
He had a friend whose family business happened to have some
dealings with a branch of the Drayton Group, so he was invited
to the gathering as well, tagging along with his friend.
“What do you mean, sister–in–law?” Atticus said, displeased.
“This is my niece, she’s not married yet, so don’t call her that!”
Felix shrank his neck in fright, but more than that, he was
surprised.
He knew that the Atticus before him was the president of a
branch of the Drayton Group, but he hadn’t expected Kaneeta
to be Atticus’s niece.
He had never heard Edmund mention this before!
Could it be that even Edmund didn’t know?
“It’s alright, Atticus.” Kaneeta smiled at Atticus, then turned to
Felix and said, “Mr. Corbin, Edmund and I have already broken
up, so please don’t call me that anymore.””
Chapter 57
“What!”
This surprised Felix even more.
All of Edmund’s close friends knew how much Kaneeta loved
him, and how much she had done for him.
She had actually broken up with Edmund?
