Chapter 49
“Yes, you probably don’t know yet. Nya was afraid you’d worry, so she wouldn’t let me tell you. Her ex–husband was a pervert- he started abusing her not long after they got married. Nya has suffered a lot.”
Lila suddenly fell silent. After a while, she asked, “Nya told you
this?”
“Yeah. Why?”
“It’s nothing… Since Neeta refuses to come back, just let it be. You should come home for dinner.”
Edmund suddenly felt a strong reluctance to return. He said,
“You go ahead and eat. I have something to take care of, I’ll be
back later.”
After hanging up, his eyes remained fixed on the direction where Woodrow’s car had disappeared.
Woodrow, do you think you’ve won? Dream on. Kaneeta’s heart belongs only to me. You’re nothing but a tool she’s using to spite
- me. Just wait–sooner or later, she’ll come back to me…
Meanwhile, in Woodrow’s car, the atmosphere was a little

strange as well.
The driver sat quietly in the front, while Woodrow and Kaneeta
shared the back seat.
The two of them remained silent.
Kaneeta kept her head turned, gazing out at the scenery passing by the window.

In the end, it was Woodrow who broke the silence.
“Have you had dinner?”
In fact, Kaneeta hadn’t eaten yet.
But she lied, “I’ve already eaten!
The thought of her impending engagement to Woodrow’s cousin made her feel awkward whenever she was around Woodrow.
Woodrow glanced at her, his gaze complex, as if he could see
right through her lie.
But he didn’t press the issue. He simply told the driver in front,
“Take Ms. Drayton home.”
“Yes, Mr. Hartwell.”
The driver clearly knew the address and immediately changed

direction.
Kaneeta’s phone vibrated twice. She looked down to see a
message from Cora.
“Neeta, can you believe it? I ran into Miguel this afternoon, and
he even gave me two tickets to his art exhibition!”
Kaneeta’s eyelashes fluttered lightly.
“He must know we’re close, so he gave me two tickets on purpose.
Isn’t that just an excuse for us to go together? I mean, could he
have had a thing for you all along?”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Kaneeta replied.
She and Miguel had only met a few times and barely exchanged
any words.
How could there be anything between them?
“My dear Neeta, you really underestimate your own charm. If I
were a man, I’d definitely like you.”
“Even if you were a man, it wouldn’t matter if you liked me. I
wouldn’t say yes to you.”
“Ugh, you’re breaking my heart! It’s my birthday today, can’t you
say something nice for once?”
Chapter 49
“Nope.”
“Bad Neeta!”
After a few more playful exchanges, Cora said she was off to
have some fun, and their chat ended.
Staring at Miguel’s name on her phone screen, Kaneeta couldn’t
help but turn to Woodrow and say, “Mr. Hartwell… there’s something I’d like to ask you.”
“Go ahead,” Woodrow replied calmly.
“Do you know about the engagement between the Drayton family and the Hartwell family?”
As soon as she asked, Woodrow’s eyes flickered.
But when he spoke again, his tone was still calm: “Yes, I know.”
After hearing his answer, Kaneeta fell silent and said nothing
more.
In truth, she didn’t feel much of anything in her heart.
It made sense–since she was going to be engaged to his cousin,
there was a good chance they’d become family in the future. It
was only natural for him to look after his future sister–in–law a
bit more.

She stopped talking, but Woodrow suddenly asked, “What do you think about the engagement?”
“Hm?” The question caught Kaneeta off guard. “What do I
think…”
