Chapter 38
Woodrow said nothing, simply listening quietly.
“Later, my mother fell gravely ill. We sought out every renowned
doctor, but still couldn’t save her.” Kaneeta’s voice was already
choked with emotion. “As she was dying, she held my hand and
told me that she didn’t care how much I achieved, she only hoped
I would never give up dancing.”

Kaneeta’s eyes were red. “I promised my mother, I promised her
that no matter what, I would never give up dancing. But now… I
can’t dance anymore. If my mother knew, she’d be so
disappointed, wouldn’t she?”
Woodrow looked at Kaneeta, pained by her memories, his
Adam’s apple bobbing as he finally broke the silence.

He slowly reached out, gently and with restraint, covering her
trembling hand with his.
“Don’t say that,” his voice was low and gentle, as if it carried the
power to soothe pain. “Your mother wouldn’t be disappointed.
She wanted you not to give up dancing because she hoped you
would pursue the dreams you love. What’s happened now isn’t
your fault.”
Chapter 38
Kaneeta looked at him with red, tearful eyes.
Woodrow leaned in slightly, meeting her gaze earnestly. “You
and your mother must have been very close. It’s just that you’re
trapped in pain right now, so some things are hard to see clearly!”
Yes, such a gentle mother, a mother who loved her so much…
Kaneeta felt a little relief in her heart, but her eyes grew even
redder, and tears fell in large drops.
She missed her mother so much.
“Besides, medicine is advancing. Your leg might recover in the
future.”
Woodrow pulled out two tissues. He wanted to wipe her tears for
her, but as he raised his hand a little, his gaze darkened and he
placed the tissues in her hand instead.
Kaneeta wiped her tears and smiled. “Thank you, Mr. Hartwell.
After talking to you, I feel much better.”
As for what Woodrow said at the end, she just took it as him
trying to comfort her and didn’t take it to heart.
It wasn’t that she hadn’t tried, but every doctor who had
examined her leg said she would never be able to dance again.
Chapter 38
Woodrow said nothing, naturally taking the used tissues from
her hand and tossing them into the trash.
Kaneeta’s brow twitched.
This act couldn’t really be called intimate, but she felt a faint,
strange sensation in her heart.
She tried hard to brush away that odd feeling.
The setting sun cast a golden glow over the hospital room, warm
and gentle.
For a moment, neither of them knew what to say.
Until Kaneeta’s phone rang.
It was an unfamiliar number.
Not knowing if it was something work–related, Kaneeta
answered the call.
She hadn’t expected that as soon as the call connected, Nyasia’s
aggressive voice would come through.
“Kaneeta, what do you mean by this? Mom and I came to see you
out of kindness, and you had someone stop us at the door. Are
you deliberately making things difficult for us?”
Chapter 38
Kaneeta said nothing, simply hung up, blocked the number, and
did it all in one go.
Saying even one more word to Nyasia was a waste of time.
Woodrow, seeing her reaction, could guess who had called.
Besides, Nyasia’s voice was so shrill that he had vaguely heard
some of it.
“Get some rest,” Woodrow stood up. “I’ll be going now.”
“Take care, Mr. Hartwell.”
Kaneeta wanted to get up to see him off, but Woodrow insisted it
wasn’t necessary.
After he left, Kaneeta turned and looked at the bouquet of lilies
he had just brought.
They were beautiful.
