Chapter 28
Matthew chuckled twice. “Don’t worry, this person is absolutely
reliable.”
After a pause, he added, “Sweetheart, I’m not trying to force you into a marriage alliance. I just want you to leave Edmund as soon
as possible. When you come back, spend some time getting to know your intended partner. If you really don’t think it’s going to
work, then forget it.”
“Dad, I understand,” Kaneeta smiled. “But… you still haven’t told
me–who exactly is this person?”
“Hahaha, I almost forgot. He is…”
Before Matthew could finish, someone nearby suddenly spoke
up, sounding rather urgent.
“Let’s talk later, something’s come up at the company. I need to
check on it, I’ll hang up now!”
With that, Matthew hurriedly ended the call.
Kaneeta smiled helplessly.
Forget it. She could take her time getting to know her intended

partner after she returned.
Staring at the phone screen as it gradually dimmed, Kaneeta
suddenly felt a bit dazed.
It seemed like it had been a long time since she had spoken so
openly with her father.
She used to be so foolish.
After taking a shower and lying in bed, Kaneeta found herself
unable to sleep. It was a long time before she finally drifted off,
only to wake up suddenly in the middle of the night.
She had dreamed again of that car accident two years ago.
She sat up, gasping for air, her forehead covered in cold sweat.
That nightmare made it impossible for her to sleep peacefully
again.
Kaneeta changed her clothes and left the bedroom.
She wanted to go out for a walk.
This was a high–end residential area with excellent security.
Even if she went for a walk outside in the middle of the night,
there wouldn’t be any danger.

The living room was already pitch dark, but the balcony light
was still on.
Who could still be out there at this hour?
“Mom, why did you call me over in the middle of the night? What
do you want to talk about?” Nyasia’s sleepy voice drifted from the
balcony. “I was about to go to bed…”
“How much more do I have to worry about you?” That was Lila’s
voice.
So it was a mother and daughter having a late–night talk.
Kaneeta was about to leave when Lila’s next words made her
stop in her tracks.
“You and your brother… The two of you need to stop this at once!”
What did she mean by that?
Kaneeta’s fingers clenched tightly.
“Mom…”
“So you still remember I’m your mother? The two of you… You’re
going to be the death of me! You went abroad, got married, and
still couldn’t behave. Now you want a divorce, and after coming
back, you insist on staying at your brother’s place. Are you

hoping Neeta won’t notice something’s off between you two? Tomorrow, you’re coming back to the old house with me!”
“I don’t want to! So what if she finds out?” Nyasia said indifferently. “That foolish woman–Ed can coax her with just a few words. Besides, she was never supposed to be with Ed! If it hadn’t been for my falling out with Ed back then, would he have
confessed to Kaneeta out of spite?”
“Don’t say another word! Don’t forget, you two are siblings! Even
if you’re not related by blood, you grew up together as brother
and sister! I’m telling you, I will never allow the two of you to be
together!”
“Oh, Mom… I can be your daughter, and your daughter–in–law
too.”
“Stop talking nonsense. You can only be my daughter. As for you
and Ed, I will never approve of it.”
“You’re so old–fashioned!”
“Alas, if it weren’t for the two of you constantly worrying me,
why would I treat Kaneeta so well? I just want to keep her steady,
so she won’t break up with Ed, to stop you two from causing even
more trouble! Honestly, with her humble background, she’s not
worthy of Ed. But what can I do? With you two being so
outrageous, what heiress would be able to tolerate it?”
Nyasia let out a couple of laughs. “So, Mom, you don’t actually like Kaneeta that much, do you?”
“Heh… Like or dislike, it’s all the same. After all, she’s only fit to
work under Ed.” Lila’s tone was full of contempt. “What a pity-
our Ed should have married an heiress.”
In the darkness, Kaneeta’s face was expressionless.
So that’s how it was.
So even the last bit of warmth she felt in the Kuntz family was
fake.
Lila had known about the affair between the adopted siblings all
along.
And had gone to great lengths to keep it from her.
The reason she treated her well on the surface was only to use
her as a tool to stand between the two adopted siblings.
In reality, she looked down on her from the bottom of her heart.
Suddenly, Kaneeta remembered the first time Edmund had taken
her to meet Lila. Lila had kept probing about her family
background.
She had wanted to tell the truth about her family, but thinking of
her father’s attitude, she didn’t know how to begin, so she simply said she came from an ordinary family.
She hadn’t meant to hide anything; she just thought that after having a proper talk with her father, and once he could accept their relationship, she would tell Edmund the truth about her
family.
At the time, after hearing her answer, Lila’s expression had
seemed a little odd.
But it was only for a moment; soon, she was all gentle smiles
again.
Kaneeta had thought she must have imagined it.
Looking back now, Lila had looked down on her from the very
beginning.
She just didn’t want her son and adopted daughter to be together, and thought Kaneeta was useful, so she pretended to accept her.
