Chapter 26
After Lila’s coughing had subsided a little, she gripped Nyasia’s
hand tightly.
“Mom is just worried about you… sigh!”
She let out a long sigh, as if she wanted to say more but stopped
herself.
Nyasia looked guilty and was about to say something else, but
Lila had already stood up.
“Alright, I’ll go make dinner!”
“Oh, Mom, just let the maid do it. Why do you have to cook
yourself?”
Lila smiled, “Can the maid’s cooking compare to mine? Your
brother and your sister–in–law both love my braised ribs.”
“Hmph, the two of them are out having a candlelight dinner
tonight. Why bother…” Nyasia said with a sullen face.
“I just called your brother. He said they’re coming back soon and
probably haven’t eaten much. No matter what, they can still eat a
few ribs.”
With that, Lila went off to busy herself in the kitchen.
By the time Kaneeta and Edmund returned, the house was
already filled with the aroma of food.
“Mom,” Edmund called out.

Wearing an apron, Lila came out of the kitchen, beaming at the
two of them. “You’re back? Go wash your hands, I’ve made your
favorite braised ribs.”
“Mrs. Kuntz…” Kaneeta’s eyes grew a little moist as she looked at
her.
To her, Lila was the last warmth left in the Kuntz family.
“Oh, why are you still calling me ‘Mrs. Kuntz‘?” Lila said kindly.
“Isn’t it time to change what you call me?”
Kaneeta opened her mouth, but couldn’t get the word out.
Lila must still think the two of them were really married.
But she herself knew very well that the marriage certificate was
fake.
No matter what, she just couldn’t bring herself to call her “Mom.”
“Mom, Neeta’s just not used to it yet, don’t worry,” Edmund tried

to smooth things over, thinking she was just shy.
“It’s alright, from now on we’re all family. You’ll get used to it in
time,” Lila said gently. “Dinner will be ready soon. After you wash your hands, just wait by the table.”
She asked as she turned and walked back into the kitchen.
“Mrs. Kuntz, let me help you,” Kaneeta also walked into the
kitchen.
“Oh, no need, it’s almost done. You work so hard at the company
every day, you should rest more…” Lila chattered as she busied
herself, “I’ve always told Edmund not to let you get too tired. It’s
not been easy for you these years. He can be careless sometimes,
not very considerate.”
Kaneeta silently turned on the tap and washed her hands.
Lila not only made braised ribs, but also several homestyle dishes
and the soup that Kaneeta liked.
Soon it was time to eat. The four of them sat around the dining
table together, Kaneeta and Edmund side by side, with Lila and
Nyasia sitting across from them.
The crisp sound of the porcelain spoon tapping the edge of the bowl echoed in the dining room. Lila picked up a piece of tender,

stewed rib and placed it in Kaneeta’s bowl.
“Eat more, you’re too thin.” The fine lines at the corners of her
eyes were filled with a caring smile.
Kaneeta thanked her, and as she glanced over, she saw Nyasia
purse her lips in displeasure.
“Mom, why don’t you give me a piece?” Nyasia whined.
“You child, don’t you dislike ribs? Here, have some eggplant
instead.”
Nyasia muttered under her breath, “She gets ribs, I get eggplant…”
“Nya!” Lila’s tone carried a hint of warning.
Nyasia huffed and said nothing more.
Kaneeta continued eating quietly, as if she couldn’t even be
bothered to argue with her.
Feeling even more annoyed, Nyasia glanced up at Edmund sitting
across from her, then suddenly smirked mischievously. Under
the table, her leg slowly moved closer to Edmund’s…
