Chapter 18
He made a post on Riverside High’s Facebook group.[]
The title was: “About Avery Morgan–The Truth I Should’ve Told“]
It was this huge confession about our whole story.[]
He talked about my past, how hard I worked, what a decent person I was. About how Madison played him, how he said that awful shit. About what an idiot he’d been, how sorry he was, how messed up he felt.[]
But the biggest thing? He laid out all the facts.]
How I never took his money. How I busted my ass at jobs to pay him back. About that little notebook where I wrote down every cent I owed.[]
He even posted photos of Venmo receipts and the handwritten IOUS I’d given him.[]
At the end of the post, he wrote:[]
[Avery was never a parasite.[]
She’s the most independent, strongest, kindest person I’ve ever known.[]
I didn’t deserve her friendship.[]
I destroyed the most precious thing in my life with my own hands.[]
If I could do it over, I wish I’d never met Madison.[]
But there’s no going back.
Avery, I’m sorry.]
I’m not asking for forgiveness. I just want you to be happy.]]
And to everyone who hurt Avery–you better watch your backs.]]]
The post went absolutely viral.]
Once the truth came out, everyone completely flipped.[]
People who’d trashed me started going after Madison. People who’d felt sorry for Madison started feeling sorry for me.[]
Madison got totally destroyed online.[]
“Take bitch,” “manipulative slut,” “homewrecker“-they threw every nasty word at her.[]
I heard she couldn’t handle the pressure and dropped out too.[]

But none of that mattered to me anymore.[]
My manager held up her phone. “Avery, is this about you?“[]
I looked at it and nodded. “Yeah.“[]
“Holy shit, you went through all that.” She looked at me like her heart was breaking. “That guy’s a total asshole.”
“Ancient history.” I handed her phone back and got back to work.]]
Yeah, ancient history.].
Justice that shows up late isn’t really justice. Like getting an apology after someone’s already destroyed your life–what’s the point?
I never wanted this whole internet drama thing. I just wanted one person to stick up for me when everything was falling apart.]]
Not someone crawling back to say sorry after the damage was already done.]]
Another month went by. I’d saved up enough cash and was ready to bounce. Time to get even farther away and start over.[]
Maybe I’d finish high school somewhere else. Maybe not.]
But whatever happened, it’d be on my terms.[]
Last day of work, Dylan walked in.[]
He looked way better–at least he didn’t look like death warmed over anymore.[]
“You’re leaving?” His voice was barely there.[]
I nodded.
He went quiet for a while, then said: “I’m not gonna follow you anymore.“[]
That caught me off guard. For the past month, he’d been here every damn day without fail.[]
“I finally get it.” He gave me this bitter smile. “If you have to force it, it’s not real.“[]
“I already hurt you once. I can’t do it again.“]]
He pulled an envelope out of his backpack.]
“This is about what happened after you left. The school took down all the lies about you.“[]
“Everyone who bullied you got in serious trouble.“]
“Madison got expelled.”
“And this is… compensation. For what you went through.“]
I didn’t take it. “I don’t need any of that.“[]

“I know.” He set the envelope on the counter. “But you deserve it.“[]
“It’s not charity or pity.“]]
“It’s justice. Late as hell, but still justice.“]
I looked at him and for the first time didn’t immediately say no.]
“Avery.” He looked me straight in the eye.[]
“Thanks. For everything.”
“For sticking by me. For putting up with my crap. For being like family.”
“I’m sorry I screwed it all up. Took me way too long to get my head out of my ass.“[]
“I’m sorry I never deserved you as family.“]]
He stopped, eyes getting red.]
“Take care of yourself, okay?“]
“When you find someone good, don’t be scared to let them in.“[]
“Don’t let one jackass like me ruin it for everyone else.“]]
“You deserve the world.“[]
He turned to go.
“Dylan.” I called after him.]
He stopped but didn’t look back.]
“You take care too.” That was all I could manage.[]
His shoulders shook. Then he was gone.[]
For real this time.
