Chapter 5
The bullying got way worse after that.]]
I started finding nasty notes all over my desk.[]
GET OUT, LEECH
Messy handwriting, but the message was crystal clear.[]
SHAMELESS SLUT]]
This one was in red marker. Super classy.]
STAY AWAY FROM DYLAN[]
Someone even drew a gross little bug next to this one.[]
At first I’d just crumple them up and toss them.]
But they kept coming. Morning, lunch, after school.]
Like someone had nothing better to do than watch my desk all day.[]
Then someone dumped black ink all over my textbooks.[]
My AP Bio book was totally ruined–I’d spent months filling it with notes and highlights.[]
Everything just… gone. Completely trashed.[]
All that work for nothing.]]
And someone shredded my assignment.[]
This thing was worth 20% of our final grade–I’d stayed up three straight nights working on it.]
When I went to turn it in, just the cover was left. Everything else? Gone.[]
Mrs. Peterson looked at me like I was insane. “Avery, where’s your paper?“[]
“I finished it, but someone-“]]
“But what?“]
I couldn’t finish. Who was gonna believe someone actually destroyed my homework? Sounded like the lamest excuse ever.[]
So I ate the zero.
But honestly? The silent treatment was way worse.[]

Chapter 5
Nobody talked to me anymore. Walking down the hallway, kids I’d known forever would literally duck into classrooms to avoid me.
Like I was radioactive or something.
In class, the desk next to mine was always empty. Always.
If someone accidentally started to sit there, they’d see me and bolt.]
“Oh crap, sorry–my friend’s sitting here.“]]
They didn’t even care how fake it sounded.]]
In the cafeteria, the second I sat down, everyone would grab their trays and bail.[]
Like being near me for even one more second would kill them.]
One time, an entire table cleared out when I sat down.[]
Eight seats, and suddenly it was just me.]]
People all around were whispering and pointing. I kept my head down, shoving food in my mouth like a robot.]
Everything tasted like cardboard.]]
My tears kept dripping into my lunch, making it all salty.[]
I started skipping classes after that.
Why sit in a room full of people who hated me when I could just hide?]
But even my dorm wasn’t safe anymore.]
My roommates weren’t even trying to be subtle about it.[]
They’d say stuff right to my face: “God, it sucks living with someone like her.“]
“I know, right? So embarrassing.“[]
And they’d use my shampoo without asking, like they had every right to it.
“Whatever, Dylan probably bought it anyway. What’s the big deal?”
I told them I bought it myself.]]
They just rolled their eyes. “Sure you did.“]
“Look at Little Miss Innocent over here.“]]
Then they started raiding my snacks like it was their personal pantry.]
Locking stuff up didn’t help–they’d just break into my stuff anyway.]]
Chapter 5
“Come on, don’t be such a bitch about it. We’re roommates.“]
“It’s not even your money anyway.“[]
But the worst was when they dumped all my bedding in the hallway.]
Came back from class and my bed was totally stripped.]
Comforter, pillows, sheets–all of it just gone.]]
Found everything thrown in the hall with muddy footprints all over my blankets.].
“Leeches should sleep outside anyway,” the ringleader said with this nasty smirk.[]
The others started laughing. “Yeah, don’t contaminate our room.“]
“Just go crash at Dylan’s place. That’s what you want anyway, right?“]
I stood in the hallway holding my blankets.]]
Everyone walking by just stared–some looked sorry for me, others disgusted, but most seemed entertained by the whole thing.
Nobody helped though.]
Not one person said a word.[]
That night I sat in the hallway and cried until I had nothing left.[]
My throat was raw, eyes swollen shut. I looked like hell.[]
I almost called Dylan.[]
Had my finger hovering over his name for like ten minutes, but couldn’t do it.]]
What was the point?]
He’d just say it was no big deal. Told me I was overreacting.
And he’d say it would blow over soon.[]
But when exactly is “soon“?]
A month?
Two months?
Or the rest of my freaking life?!]
