Chapter 9
“Hey,” I said to the group of coworkers who had been watching from a distance, “could you send me the video you recorded yesterday at the wedding? I want to see it.”
They looked at one another awkwardly.
“I’m not trying to make trouble,” I added calmly. “I just want the footage.”
After a moment of hesitation, they finally forwarded the clips to me.
Just as I was leaving the office, I ran into Luciano’s mother and sister at the entrance.
“Trista,” his mother sighed dramatically, “you’ve made your point, haven’t you? It’s time to stop. Ever since you left, your sister and I haven’t been able to eat or sleep.”
I raised a brow. “Probably because no one’s around to cook for you anymore. But don’t worry–Darlene can take over that role now. She’s already replacing me, right?”
Luciano’s mother looked scandalized. “Don’t be ridiculous! She’s just Luciano’s assistant. You’re the one we recognize as our daughter–in–law.”
I let out a short, bitter laugh. “Recognize,‘ huh? You mean because I come from a well–off family? So I’m supposed to be your free meal ticket? Hoping to suck me dry like leeches?”
Luciano’s sister stepped forward. “That’s a bit harsh. We came here to talk things out. You’re part of the family–we’re trying to be kind, and you’re being rude!”
I rolled my eyes. “A family like yours? No, thanks. Darlene fits in much better with you people.”
I brushed past Lucy, not sparing her another glance.
That night, a friend messaged me urgently.
“Trista, check this out–someone’s spreading nasty rumors about you on social media.”
I opened the link.
It was a video from an anonymous account on Tik Tok.
Even though the faces were blurred, it was painfully obvious that the bride in the video was me.
The clips had been selectively edited and dubbed over with a voice distorter, framing a twisted narrative.
“Bride caught messing around with childhood friend on wedding day–groom walks in to find her in another man’s clothes. Groom cancels wedding and marries his loyal secretary instead.”
The comments were brutal:
“What a shameless woman. Can’t even keep it in her pants on her wedding day? I’d lose it if I were the groom.”
“She’s obviously got an insatiable appetite. Might as well just go work the streets.”
“What a filthy tramp. Her parents must be trash too to raise something like her.”
And on and on…
As if that wasn’t enough, there were comments showering Luciano and Darlene with praise:
“The groom and his secretary are clearly soulmates. The bride didn’t deserve him anyway.”
“True love always finds a way! Congratulations to the new couple!”
“They’re meant to be. Destiny brought them together!”
Chapter 9
I stared at the screen for a moment–and then I smiled.
I knew Darlene would try to spin the fact that I wore Paul’s clothes into some kind of scandal. That’s why I’d been prepared.
I immediately uploaded the videos that my coworkers had sent me and recorded a statement of my own to clear the air.
“Hi everyone. I’m the bride in the video.”
“Let me clarify a few things: On the day of the wedding, I was not ‘messing around‘ with
my
childhood friend.”
“My then–fiancé refused to let me ride in the lead car, saying his secretary–who supposedly gets carsick–had to ride with him. He left me behind without a second thought. So yes, I got into my childhood friend’s car.
“Then, on the way, I was deliberately hit by a car–driven by that secretary’s best friend. I couldn’t get to the venue in time, and my fiancé decided to let his secretary take my place at the altar and finish the entire wedding ceremony in my place.”
“That was the final straw. I changed out of my wedding dress, left him, and ended the relationship.
“For the record, the woman who hit me is now under administrative detention and will face criminal charges. I stand by every word I’ve said and am prepared to pursue legal action against the person who posted that slanderous video.”
“Also, I’ll be releasing full footage of the original wedding day–showing the truth of who proposed to whom, who chased whom, and who truly valued the relationship.”
With that, I uploaded all the receipts: Luciano renting the cruise, setting off fireworks, proposing jumping just to win me over. Everything.
Let the world see who the real manipulator was. Let them choke on the truth.
