Chapter 7
Paul pulled our marriage license out of his bag and held it right up to Luciano’s face.
“Open those eyes of yours and read it. I’m Trista’s legal husband.”
Luciano stared at the certificate, frozen in disbelief for a long moment.
“You… You actually married this guy?”
I crossed my arms. “I told you yesterday. It’s official. We’re married.”
His eyes reddened, voice cracking. “Trista, how could you be so reckless?! Marriage isn’t something you just jump into! How could you run off and get married without even thinking about how I’d feel?!”
I stared at him coldly. “Why the hell would I need to consider your feelings? Do I need your permission to get married? Did you think about my feelings when you made out with Darlene on our wedding stage?”
Luciano inhaled sharply, then tried a softer tone.
“Okay, fine. It’s done. I don’t want to fight with you anymore. Just divorce him. We’ll pretend none of this ever happened. We can start over–go register our marriage for real, plan a proper wedding-”
Paul had heard enough.
“Are you dense, or just deaf? She’s done with you. She’s my wife now. Legal. Final. Period.”
“If you keep harassing her, I won’t be so polite next time.”
Luciano shoved Paul in the chest. “Who the hell do you think you are? Trista doesn’t love you–she loves me! She only married you to piss me off. You actually think you mean something to her?”
“You don’t get to decide who she loves,” Paul snapped. “Maybe she loved you once, but not anymore. Now her heart belongs to me.”
Luciano’s face twisted with rage. “You little punk. You think you can steal my woman and walk away unscathed?! You clearly don’t know who you’re messing with!”
He swung a punch, but Paul dodged it with ease and landed a solid kick right between the legs.
Luciano crumpled with a groan, face turning an ugly shade of purple.
“You kicked me?! That was a sneak attack! I’ll kill you!”
But Paul wasn’t done. He’d trained in combat sports, and Luciano didn’t stand a chance.
Within seconds, Luciano was flat on the pavement, moaning in pain, unable to get up.
Darlene rushed over, gasping. “Oh my God, Mr. Jones! What happened to you?!”
Luciano growled, clutching his stomach. “Get a lawyer! I’m suing him! I’ll bleed him dry!”
“You really think you can lay a hand on me and still have a career in this city?!”
Darlene tried to help him up, whispering urgently, “I told you not to come after her. She’s still furious. Nothing you say right now will
work.”
“You should just come back with me. Wait a few months–once she cools off, maybe she’ll come back to you on her own…”
Luciano shoved her away.
“A few months? By then she’ll probably be pregnant with his kid!”
He stumbled to his feet and glared at me. “Trista, are you really choosing this loser over me? He’s just a nobody! What can he possibly give you?”
Chapter 7
He waved an arm toward the model home. “You two think you can actually buy a place here? Even if you scrape enough to afford one, you’ll be stuck paying off a mortgage for the rest of your lives.”
“You love this development? I’ll buy the whole damn neighborhood and gift it to you!”
Paul chuckled darkly. “Big talk, Mr. Jones. You know buying out Lakeside Villas would cost, what, a billion dollars?”
Luciano flinched. He didn’t have that kind of money, not even close.
“I might not have that much,” he blustered, “but I’m still a hundred times better than him. This guy probably can’t even afford a bathroom here. If he can buy even one of these villas, I’ll take his last name!”
Paul raised an eyebrow. “So you’re saying you’d change your name to Luciano Anderson?“.
Luciano sneered. “Please. What a load of crap.”
“You even know who the developer of this project is?”
“Of course I do. It’s Anderson Group. What, you gonna pretend you‘
re
their heir now?”
Paul flashed a cool grin. “Well… remember what you just said.
