Chapter 4
Paul looked absolutely stunned. “N–No, of course I don’t mind.”
Then he blinked. “Wait… so you’re not going to the wedding?”
“Why would I? Luciano already completed the entire ceremony–with Darlene.”
I turned to face him, eyes calm but resolute. “Didn’t you say you didn’t want me marrying someone else? Well–how about we go get a marriage license?”
Paul froze like someone had short–circuited his brain. “You mean… us? As in, we get married?”
I nodded. “If you don’t want to, it’s fine. Forget I said anything.”
He lit up instantly. “Hell yeah I want to!”
“Why wouldn’t I? That’s literally the best thing I could hope for!” ry
Without another word, Paul floored it. We barreled down the road and, before I fully processed what was happening, we were standing at the City Hall–married.
Just like that, we had our license.
“Alright,” I said, brushing imaginary dust off my borrowed shirt. “Let’s
go to the hotel.”
Paul’s face turned beet red. “W–Wait. That fast? I mean… we just got married I haven’t even held your hand yet!”
I rolled my eyes. “Relax. I meant take me to the wedding hotel. The reception’s ‘congrats‘ to Luciano and Darlene.”
Paul grinned. “Now that I’m in for.”

Once we arrived, I casually grabbed a small envelope, stuffed 4.04 cents inside, and found an inconspicuous corner table to sit at with
Paul.
We waited. Eventually, Luciano and Darlene made their way around the room, doing the wedding toasts.
When they finally got to our table, they hadn’t even recognized me at first.
Then Luciano stopped mid–sentence, eyes narrowing.
“Trista? When did you get here? And what are you wearing? Whose clothes are those?”

I gave him a cool look. “Well, the bride changed. Figured it’d be weird if I still showed up in the gown, don’t you think?”
He looked mildly flustered. “Don’t take it the wrong way. You had that accident and weren’t going to make it, so I asked Darlene to step
in and handle the ceremony. We didn’t want to miss the good hour. Besides, it would’ve been rude to keep everyone waiting.”
I nodded slowly. “Totally understandable.”
Right then, Luciano’s mother and his sister, Lucy, came over.
Lucy wrinkled her nose and let out a laugh. “Wow, sis–in–law, you’re wearing a guy’s clothes? That’s a look.”
Luciano’s mother chimed in, tone sharp. “Trista, honey, you are being completely ridiculous. Did you really miss your own wedding just because you couldn’t sit in the lead car? How childish. You’ve completely humiliated Luciano in front of everyone!”
“Thank God Darlene stepped in, or our whole family would’ve been humiliated. You better never pull something like this again. I don’t care how much Luciano spoils you—next time, I won’t let it slide!”
I smiled coldly. “Oh? You mean no one told you I got into a car accident?”
“And the driver who hit us? Darlene’s best friend. She’s already been arrested and is facing criminal charges for intentional vehicular assault.”

Darlene visibly tensed. Luciano immediately stepped in to defend her.
“Wait, Darlene’s friend? Are you seriously trying to say she sent someone to crash into your car?”
“Isn’t that exactly what happened?”
“No way. I know Darlene better than anyone. She’s sweet, kind, has zero malice in her. She wouldn’t hurt a fly, let alone send someone to crash into you.”
Darlene’s eyes welled with tears. “Thank you, Mr. Jones. I… I swear, I had nothing to do with it. If you didn’t believe me, I’d never be
able to clear my name.”
Luciano pulled her into his side. “Don’t worry. Some people just like to twist kindness into something dirty.”
Then he turned to me. “You need to apologize to her. She helped you today. I was even planning to hold a make–up wedding for you, but if you keep slandering her like this, forget it!”
I laughed, a short, sharp sound. It wasn’t a bitter laugh, just one of pure amusement. I was completely done with him.
“No need for a makeup wedding. Someone else already offered.”
I turned to Paul and smiled. “Right, husband?
He returned the smile, softer, warme
leaned over to press a gentle kiss to my forehead. “Always, Mrs. Anderson.”
Luciano looked like he’d just been punched in the gut. “Wait–what did you just call him?”
I met his stunned gaze a and said clearly, “Husband. He’s my husband. It’s legal.‘
“Thanks for not marrying me, Luciano. I’m officially Mrs. Paul Anderson now.
