Chapter 20
Mason was busy with work, and his assistant had to be more attentive.
He had personally seen Harper waiting for Mason to finish work, buying, the most expensive cat food to feed stray cats downstairs at the group. How could such a kind–hearted woman be a murderer?
That incident had caused a stir, creating quite a commotion in Moridise. The trial had several inconclusive results, and it was rumored that the Walker family had hired the best lawyers and bribed the kidnappers to change their testimonies, which eventually got Harper out.
But what the truth really was, only the people involved would know.
“Miss, do you still like Mason?”
As soon as they stepped out of the elevator, James asked such a question.
Harper shook her head. She had been asked this question too many times, and her answer remained the same, unchanged.
Without waiting for her to speak, James was relieved by her attitude. alone, “Mr. Walker has arranged for you to work with me. If you need anything during this time, just let me know.”
“Okay.”
James had matured, no longer the naive and clumsy college graduate from back then. Standing in front of Harper in a tailored suit with an elegant demeanor, she almost didn’t recognize him.
“Miss, I don’t want you to be polite with me.”
He was sincere.

Harper could feel it, “I’m not being polite.”
“In the past, you helped me a lot. It was only later that I found out my mother was sick, and you paid the medical bills for me.” James’s eyes were filled with shame, “But I couldn’t help you in return.”
“It was just a small favor”
For Harper back then, the medical bills for James’s mother were equivalent to her weekly allowance, yet they had inadvertently saved at life. James’s gratitude has lasted to this day, “So if there’s anything I can do to help, just ask. I’m duty–bound.”
“Really?”
Having endured so much hardship and seen so much deceit, Harper had learned to be cautious about others‘ kindness. James nodded vigorously, “Of course.”
“Mr. Walker, did he ask you to marry me?” She lightly bit her lip, asking this question with a sense of shame.
With the engagement to Noah canceled, Liam had tried to solve the
problem by pushing her toward James. It was unfair, she shouldn’t drag someone else into her mess. someone else
As for Noah, he was a playboy with other women. If they could get married, Harper would be a cover; she wouldn’t stop him from doing. whatever he wanted.
But James was a good man.
James nodded sincerely, “Yes.”
“I will refuse Mr. Walker. Don’t feel pressured.”
“I’m not pressured,” James replied almost instinctively-

The Zhou Corporation branch and Mason’s subsidiary were in the same building.
Walking through the dimly lit underground parking lot, sparsely
populated, Mason was on a call while walking forward when he spotted Harper.
She stood next to a white sedan, looking down, her fingers caressing the pendant around her neck.
Touching it, smiling.
As if it were some kind of treasure.
After ending the call, Mason walked straight over and mocked, “Where’s James? Did he leave you here alone?”
He greeted her, and Harper was taken aback. In the past, Mason rarely initiated conversations with her. She smiled, and when talking about James, the gloom disappeared.
“He left his car keys upstairs to get them.
Mason calmly said, “Why aren’t you with Noah anymore? Not trying to cling to him anymore?”
Knowing it was sarcasm, Harper still smiled, “The engagement with the Bennett family has been called off.”
“Didn’t you say you didn’t want to break it off?”
Her neck was slender and fair, adorned with a silver pendant in the shape of a frost flower, seemingly custom–made. Mason reached out to touch it, “What’s this?”
Before he could make contact, Harper swatted his hand away. She looked wary and distant, very protective of her belongings, but she had also said that anything Mason wanted, she would give him.

In the blink of an eye, he couldn’t even touch a necklace.
“James gave it to me. It’s not anything valuable.”
