Chapter 17
In the ward.
Elaine was with Tyler. When Graham showed up, her eyes lit up, but she was surprised not to see Melody.
“Graham, what about Melody?”
She still had that innocent look on her face.
So innocent it made him sick.
Doris’s voice came from outside, “Graham, why did you suddenly ask us to come to the hospital?”
While Elaine was spacing out, Darian and Doris had already walked into the hospital room.
“Wasn’t your dad better? Why is he in the hospital again?”
Elaine didn’t dare to speak, and Graham laughed.
“Liver’s ruined, need another transplant. Dad, Mom, do you think Melody should donate her liver again?”
Elaine felt a bit chilly inside, and it wasn’t until then that she noticed something was off.
“It was all my fault. If it was possible, I really didn’t want Melody to take any more risks, but my dad was waiting to be saved…”
She cried so hard her body shook, and Doris’s sympathy took over.
“Graham, Melody, where are they? The old grudges were already over.

After all, it was a matter of life and death…”
Graham looked at Doris and kind of saw his past self in her.
I was like that too, playing favorites again and again, treating Elaine unfairly.
“Tyler ended up here because he drank against doctor’s orders.”
Doris froze for a second.
Elaine, with a shaky voice, said, “Mom, I promise it won’t happen again. I really can’t just watch my dad die.”
Doris looked at Graham again and hesitated.
“Otherwise…”
Graham handed over the stuff. Those were the photos he put away five years ago when he brought Melody back.
Doris took it and just stood there, stunned.

At 4, Melody was hospitalized for domestic abuse, curled up in a corner, her face covered in bruises.
At 6, Melody broke her arm, stood on a stool holding back the pain, and cooked noodles for drunk Tyler. Her eyes were full of tears, but she didn’t dare to cry out loud.
At 8, she was kicked down the stairs by Tyler and curled up, unable to get up.
9 years old…

Chapter 17
She knew Melody had had a hard time before and had been abused by Tyler.
But when those experiences got captured in photos, it seemed like she finally realized what kind of hell her daughter, whom she carried for ten months, had lived through.
Graham handed over the last photo. It showed the scar on the back of Melody’s head that was usually covered by her hair.
“When she was 12, Tyler lost some money once and hit her with a beer bottle. Olive wanted to take her to the hospital and got beaten up too, couldn’t get up. Melody was passed out at home for three days. Waking up was just luck.”
Doris looked pale and could barely stand.
Her daughter almost died when she didn’t know.
Elaine was shaking all over, and suddenly dropped to her knees.
“Mom, I’ll keep an eye on Dad from now on. Can you save him this time? I’m begging you.”
Doris’s throat felt dry. Elaine was the kid she had raised little by little in her own hands.
“Starting ten years ago, Tyler got some extra money in his account every month. I checked, and all that money was cash Elaine put in at the ATM.“.
Doris felt like she got hit hard.
So, Elaine already knew about her background.
Graham looked at Tyler, “Go ahead, how did the thug who almost raped Elaine at the birthday party end up drinking with you yesterday?”

Tyler looked pale and glanced at Elaine without thinking.
His teeth chattered, but he shook his head.

“It had nothing to do with Elaine, I did it all. I couldn’t stand Melody taking my daughter’s stuff!”
“Elaine gave me money because she wanted me to make Melody’s life better. She didn’t know about me hitting Melody.”
Graham snorted.
“Melody left, no one gave you a liver, you wouldn’t make it through this week, but you were pretty lucky.”
Graham handed over the list.
Just one look, and Tyler froze.
It said he was a match with Elaine.
