Chapter 16
Elaine didn’t notice anything strange in what he said, or maybe she just took it for granted that the person in front of her was still the same Graham who always went along with her.
“The doctor said the surgery had to be done this week. I wanted to do it as soon as possible because I was afraid waiting a few days would be too hard on my dad’s health.”
“Where was the liver from?”
“Melody wasn’t…”
Elaine paused and suddenly looked up.
Graham pulled at the corner of his mouth, “So you knew it was Melody who donated the liver.”
Elaine panicked, and her tears came down first.
“I just found out too. I was going to call Melody to ask how she’s been feeling lately, but she yelled at me and said I was pretending to care like a cat crying over a mouse.”
“Graham, I knew I let Melody down too, but I had no choice. My dad was waiting in the hospital for something that could save his life.”
Graham’s heart got colder bit by bit.
In his eyes, the Elaine who had always been gentle, innocent, and needed protection gradually turned into someone completely different.
The phone vibrated.

Chapter 16
Graham looked down, it was a message from his assistant.
“Mr. Dorrick, Mrs. Dorrick already went abroad, we couldn’t find out exactly where they went or how things were.”
The extreme despair weighed on him so much he couldn’t breathe.
At that moment, he realized clearly: he had completely lost Melody.
He might never see her again.
“Graham, what’s wrong with you? You’re scaring me like this.”
Elaine cried again, “If Melody really didn’t want to save my dad, then I’d just let my dad wait for another liver. I owed Melody in the first place, it’s not her fault.”
She said she didn’t blame Melody.
But every word was blaming her for not helping.
Graham put away his phone and laughed.
“You go to the hospital first, I’ll come over later.”
Elaine’s eyes lit up, and she sniffled weakly, “Graham, if it’s really too hard for Melody, just let it go. Don’t push her.”
“Okay.”
Only then did Elaine turn around and leave.
Graham stayed where he was and looked around.
Everything in the kids‘ room was carefully picked out by Melody.
She got ready for a long time to be a good mom.

Graham’s eyes stopped on the baby carrier. Melody had shown him before how to use it.
“At that time the baby just hung in the front like this, just like a kangaroo mom, super cute, right?”
His eyes moved to the side.
“The newborn’s clothes were so tiny, just as big as my hand. I was afraid that if I used even a little force, I might hurt the baby. Graham, I think I was a little scared.”
“Isn’t this rattle cute? The baby must have the same taste as me and would like what I prepared too.”

Finally, his eyes landed on the bottles of wishing stars at the very top. Each one had Melody’s wish written inside, praying for the baby’s safety.
He walked over and took out a star, then opened it.
“Hope the baby got some rest, remember to come back to me.”
The seventh miscarriage, Melody’s broken voice fell on my ears.
“Graham, I really tried hard and was really careful, I just wanted to be mom, why couldn’t I do it?”
The words that didn’t shake him at all back then now cut deep, every word like a bloody wound on his chest.
Tears fell, and the neat handwriting got smudged.
“Sorry, it was my fault.”
“I’m sorry.”

Graham carefully stacked the stars back and put them in the bottle.
He called Doris and told her to go to the hospital with Darian.

Then, he dug out the files that had been gathering dust for five years and drove to the hospital.
The only thing he could do now was to get some overdue justice for Melody.
