Chapter 24
I nuzzled against Maverick’s head.
“I’ll come. But I still hope you can live a long, healthy life.”
Maverick’s health had been getting worse and worse lately.
Ever since his serious illness at the beginning of this year, the dark circles under his eyes never faded.
He aged all at once, losing his vitality.
That illness had terrified Bella too.
Whenever Bella was home, she’d watch to make sure Maverick finished his three meals a day.
At night she’d remind him to sleep on time.
“Get proper rest, or Mommy won’t have a chance to visit you,” Bella would always tell him.
Maverick’s medications and supplements never ran out after that.
Though when he went for check–ups at the hospital, nothing particularly bad showed up.
“Pay attention to getting more rest, don’t overthink things.”
The doctor repeatedly reminded him.
After Bella went to college, she didn’t live at home.
Maverick’s bedtime kept getting later and later.
Bella would text asking about it, but if Maverick went to bed late, he wouldn’t pugning
reply.
Later Bella started video calling to watch Maverick get into bed and go to sleep.
I watched Maverick with worry, but talking to him was useless since he couldn’t hear me.
Maverick would always sit on the tatami looking at the sky, looking at my photos.
Then he’d cry while rambling about similar things.
I’d ramble back to him.
I couldn’t stand seeing him look so pitiful, like a lost puppy.
“Paisley, I miss you. I want to come see you. You’ve been gone too long, way too long.”
“It has been a long time. I miss you too.”
“Bella’s all grown up now, so why haven’t you come to see me?”
“I’m watching every day, you just can’t see me.”
“Is it that you won’t forgive me? You hate me now, don’t you?”
“It’s not your fault. And how could I ever hate you?”

“Or is it that I’m old now, so you don’t like me anymore?”
“You are older, but I like it. You’re still a handsome old man.”
“Ever since that illness I can’t feel you anymore. You really left, didn’t you?”
“I didn’t leave. It’s just your heart isn’t well, and you won’t get proper rest.”
“You must be sick of me.”
I sighed, just hoping that when Bella came home for vacation she could straighten him out.
Maverick’s constitution was still fundamentally good, and Bella would often keep an eye on him.
His health wasn’t seriously problematic.
Later Bella graduated college and married that boy she’d liked back then.
At the wedding, Maverick untied the red safety cord from his left hand and tied it around Bella’s wrist.
When he got home he wrote me a letter saying “I gave Bella the red cord you tied on my wrist.”
“You walked her down the aisle, I led her into the chapel. This time, nobody missed anything.”
I smiled back at him: “Bella’s luckier than both of us were.”
Now there was another person in the house to manage Maverick, and I watched with real envy.
“Single and childless, yet with a son and daughter–Maverick, I’m getting a little jealous of you.”
I poked Maverick in the lower back.
Maverick’s face showed more smiles too.
Bella was very happy after marriage, and soon the house had a little granddaughter.
During meals everyone sat together, with my place still left beside Maverick.
The little granddaughter would pull on Maverick calling “Grandpa.”
Maverick would hold up my photo, teaching her to recognize people.
“This is Grandma.”
The little granddaughter shook her head.
She copied his gesture, pointing at the photo and calling out “Pretty sister.”
Maverick couldn’t win against his granddaughter, so he wrote about it in letters to me.
“Paisley, we’re in different generations again.”
“Now you’re the pretty sister and I’m Grandpa.”
But Maverick’s health was increasingly worse than before.
He often sat on the balcony tatami, staring blankly at the sky.
I watched him with heartache, but was powerless to help.

Chapter 24
This day, Maverick sat there as usual, his gaze somewhat unfocused.
Suddenly, he said softly: “Paisley, I think I’m about to come see you soon.”
My heart tightened, and I quickly floated to his side.
“Maverick…” my voice was choked with emotion.
Maverick smiled slightly: “Paisley, after all these years, I’m finally going to find you.”
My eyes reddened as I stared at him intently.
Maverick gently closed his eyes: “I’ve missed you so much.”
“All these years, I’ve been waiting, waiting to dream of you.”
“But not even a hallucination appeared.”
I couldn’t hold back anymore, the pent–up emotions in my heart surging out.
“Maverick, open your eyes and look.”
“I’m here. I came to get you.”
Maverick reached out his hand, as if trying to touch me.
“Paisley, did you come?”
He tried hard to open his eyes and look, but his eyes never focused.
He still seemed unable to see me.
“Paisley, if there’s a next life, let me confess to you first.”
“Even if you’d reject me, I wouldn’t regret it.”
I looked at him with some panic, but I couldn’t stop it.
His hand dropped down.
His eyes didn’t open again, and his chest stopped rising and falling.
I desperately wanted to shake him awake, but I couldn’t touch him.
“Maverick, I’m here. I would say yes to your confession.”
Suddenly, a voice came from overhead:
“Paisley? You really were always here.”
I looked up to see Maverick floating above.
“You… this is…”
I was somewhat incredulous–Maverick had become young again.
His soul looked like he did when we first met.
Maverick shook his left hand wearing the ring, then stepped forward to take my hand.
