Chapter 18
Mrs. Hartwell handed the items to Maverick.
“This is a family portrait taken the year she married into the Hartwell family, requested by the child’s grandparents.”
“I got the peace charm when I was praying for my son’s safety. Let Bella have it now.”
I felt uneasy, sensing something was about to happen.
Maverick looked at her warily.
He didn’t take the items or respond, lifting his foot to leave.
Mrs. Hartwell’s voice came again. She wasn’t angry, instead sounding relieved.
“The child’s grandparents want me to take Bella away. They’re very angry about Derek’s situation.”
“They won’t be good to Bella. The Hartwell family just wants to control anything that might harm them.”
Maverick’s brow was already furrowed, opening his mouth to say something.
But Mrs. Hartwell spoke first, looking very gentle when gazing at Bella.
“I have children too. I can see that Bella is being well cared for by you.”
The tenderness on Mrs. Hartwell’s face turned into deep worry.
“I won’t take Bella away, but the Hartwell family will likely make their move on the road. Drive carefully.”
Maverick nodded at her and took the items.
“Thank you for the warning.”
The wariness in Maverick’s expression had diminished, replaced by solemnity and concern.
When Maverick turned around holding Bella, she still looked pretty out of it.
Lying on Maverick’s shoulder, she said to Mrs. Hartwell: “Goodbye, Aunt.”
I didn’t immediately follow, instead staring at her for a while.
Mrs. Hartwell smiled very gently watching Bella, as if Bella were her own child.
“She means no harm to Bella.” I was certain.
Then I turned to catch up with Maverick and Bella.
Maverick had just hung up a phone call.
He handed Bella to a bodyguard beside him.
Walking outside the hospital, there were several more bodyguards with clear divisions of duty.
This was clearly a targeted arrangement by Maverick.
“Is the Hartwell family really not going to spare even a child?”

Chapter 18
My Bella was so innocent.
“Maverick surely won’t let anything happen to Bella.”
I was very nervous on the way home, constantly observing the situation.
Maverick’s car was protected in the middle by several escort vehicles.
We arrived home smoothly.
“Besides some traffic, nothing happened.”
I was somewhat puzzled, still feeling uneasy.
After this trip, Maverick became even busier.
I spent more time with Bella.
Maverick’s expression remained as gentle as usual.
When Bella saw him, she would actively ask for hugs.
Maverick picked up Bella and sat on the tatami.
He gently combed Bella’s hair.
“Bella, would you like to live here with me forever?”
I looked at Bella’s comfortable little expression and was certain.
“I believe Bella would want to stay by your side.”
When Bella tried to turn around to look at him, Maverick gently turned her back.
“Bella, do you miss your grandparents?”
Maverick looked at Bella seriously.
Bella nodded then shook her head.
Maverick’s eyes showed some nervousness.
“Bella, if someone says they want to take you away…”
“No! No! Mommy…”
Before Maverick could finish, Bella burst into tears.
Bella clung tightly to Maverick, refusing to let go.
I watched Maverick’s flustered appearance as he wiped Bella’s tears and runny nose.
My heart felt filled with warmth, and my previously uneasy heart calmed down.
Maverick coaxed her for a long time.
Only after repeatedly promising “not leaving” did Bella stop crying.
Even when she fell asleep, Bella’s hand clutched Maverick’s clothes.
