Chapter 13
Maverick looked at me seriously and said: “Paisley, long time no see.”
I choked up, unable to make a sound, only covering my aching heart.
I hadn’t seen myself like this in so long–unexpectedly peaceful and beautiful, as if sleeping.
There was no pain on my face, and everything below my neck was hidden beneath a pretty dress.
The dress was a style I’d worn before my wedding, in my favorite sky blue.
I moved closer, gently placing my hand over Bella’s little one.
“Bella will be beautiful too, more beautiful than Mommy.”
Bella looked seriously for a long time. I think I didn’t disappoint her.
I looked at Maverick and thanked him solemnly: “Thank you, Uncle.”
Maverick reached out and gently took Bella’s outstretched little hand.
After staying a moment, he said to Bella: “Time to say goodbye to Mommy.”
Bella didn’t speak, just nodded.
Maverick gathered Bella back into his arms, his hand gently resting on the back of her head.
I watched as the staff slowly pushed me into the cremation chamber.
Bella quietly buried her head in his shoulder.
“Goodbye, Mommy.” Bella’s muffled voice came from Maverick’s embrace.
I really was dead, I knew it.
Bella knew it too.
Maverick stood there for a long time before taking Bella out.
He placed Bella back in the bodyguard’s arms, looking at her tenderly.
“Bella, let’s see Mommy off.”
Maverick went to collect my ashes, carrying the urn himself.
And in Bella’s arms was my portrait.
All the way to the graveside, Maverick gently set me down, covering me bit by bit with earth.
“Paisley, I’ll take good care of Bella. Rest in peace.”
The portrait from Bella’s arms was placed on the headstone.
In the photo on the stone, I looked young and vibrant.
It was a picture he’d taken of me at my coming–of–age ceremony.

Chapter 13
I watched the ceremony proceed step by step.
Then watched Maverick bow again with Bella in his arms before turning to leave.
I was belatedly filled with doubt.
“Maverick, is this real now?”
I watched his figure carrying Bella walk away, feeling somewhat dazed.
Soon, I felt a force pulling me toward them.
“It’s real. Bella really was saved.”
I felt my existence again, and only now did my heart truly settle.
Bella was my soul’s anchor, and I remained in this world.
you.”
“Bella, Mommy is still here. Mommy will stay with you.”
I couldn’t help but hope–maybe I could watch Bella grow up.
We drove back to Maverick’s villa.
My scattered thoughts from the journey all returned the moment the trunk opened.
Maverick picked up the box containing my belongings, the bodyguard carried Bella, and the group returned to the villa.
Bella was still young–after eating, Maverick carried her to her room to rest.
Maverick waited until the child was fast asleep before sitting at the nearby desk to examine the box’s contents.
Opening the box, the bunny pillow was on top.
The bunny pillow wasn’t dusty or damaged.
But I could tell at a glance that the cotton stuffing inside had been disturbed.
“Looks like they took out the letters I hid inside.”
My non–existent heart started pounding.
Sure enough, when Maverick picked up the pillow, underneath were the letters I’d originally hidden inside.
Maverick held the pillow and gently straightened it.
He looked at it for a while before setting it down.
When he looked back at the box, he saw a stack of letters that had been sorted then scattered again.
“To Maverick“-I had written this on every envelope.
