Chapter 12
Maverick waited quietly in the hallway.
I watched from the side as the bodyguard helped Bella eat.
The assistant walked over, and Maverick gradually regained his composure.
“Mr. Rhodes, everything’s been arranged with the funeral home and cemetery.”
Maverick nodded, though his eyes were still moist.
The assistant stood beside Maverick and quietly mentioned some work–related matters.
I couldn’t understand much so I didn’t pay attention, just focused on comforting Bella.
“It’s okay that Bella can’t see Mommy. Mommy will always watch over you.”
I gazed tenderly at Bella, whose expression was still somewhat vacant, my heart bitter.
“You can see Miss Morrison now.”
I looked toward the voice–Maverick was already walking forward with the officer.
At the morgue entrance, Bella was left outside.
Maverick spoke to Bella seriously, his voice gentle but still hoarse.
“I’m going to get your mommy. Wait here for me, okay?”

Bella in the bodyguard’s arms finally seemed to show some life.
She turned her head toward Maverick, murmuring: “Mommy.”
Maverick nodded, patiently waiting for Bella’s response.
I watched Bella with both anticipation and worry.
“Wait, Mommy.” Bella slowly nodded.
Bittersweet warmth filled my heart as I couldn’t help but gently stroke Bella’s head.
Another large hand covered mine, softly caressing Bella’s hair.
“Yeah, wait for Mommy.”
I followed our overlapping hands to look back at Maverick.
His eyes held tears, his face showing gentle warmth.
Only after Bella nodded earnestly again did he enter the morgue with the officer.
But I stopped at the morgue door.
I knew I wouldn’t look good now.
“Bella, Mommy will stay here with you, okay.” I turned to look at Bella.

After Maverick left, Bella seemed to fall back into that vacant state.
I looked at Bella with heartache, remembering myself the day my parents died.
Maverick didn’t stay inside long before coming out.
His expression looked no different from when he went in.
Only his eyes seemed a bit redder, his voice a bit hoarser.
“Alright, I’ll take her now.”
He was handling the transfer with the police.
“These are Miss Morrison’s belongings that we sorted through–nothing related to the case.”
The officer pointed to a box set aside.
“That villa will remain sealed until the case is officially closed. Please try not to go near it before then.”
Maverick looked at the sealed box and nodded seriously.
But I glanced at the box nervously, feeling lost.
Maverick personally carried the box to the car trunk.
Then he got in the car holding Bella.
“Bella, we’ll be able to see Mommy soon.”
A light of anticipation gradually lit up in Bella’s eyes.
She nodded very seriously at Maverick.
But I was somewhat surprised: “See me? Can I still be seen now?”
Bad memories flashed through my mind, and I still felt pain all over.
I looked at Maverick with some worry, but he just stared out the car window in a daze.
I felt anxious the entire ride to the funeral home.
But when I actually walked inside, step by step to the cremation chamber, my heart became calm instead.
Maverick spoke very softly.
“Bella, Mommy is just ahead. Let’s go see her.”
Bella stared straight ahead, her little hands gripping Maverick’s clothes tightly.
I could see Bella was really looking forward to this.
“I hope Mommy won’t disappoint you.”
Maverick carried Bella slowly forward.
I followed slowly behind them.
I watched their silhouettes move forward bit by bit.

Then stop.
I followed their gaze to see myself.
“Mommy, pretty.”
Bella murmured as she pressed her little hand against the glass.
