Chapter 4
But the next second, Chloe’s voice came from outside the door.
“Maverick! I got hold of Derek–he says Paisley and her daughter are fine.”
I gasped and floated out of the basement.
I saw Chloe chase after him and hand over her phone.
Maverick took the call, his voice turning ice cold.
“Derek, is Paisley right there with you? I just called her and the kid was bawling her eyes out.”
“Didn’t you promise me you’d never let them get hurt?”
Hearing Maverick’s words made my heart ache.
Back when I was getting bullied at school, he’d used that same cold, hard tone to bankrupt the bullies‘ families.
He even ran them out of the city.
If I hadn’t been so foolish as to fall for him romantically, I’d probably be living happily right now.
I wonder how Maverick would feel when he found out I’d been murdered?
“Uncle?”
On the other end, Derek’s voice was calm, no different than usual.
“Sorry we bothered you. Bella’s a mama’s girl–cries the second she can’t see her.”
“Plus Paisley got all excited about having another baby with me. My bad for not getting Bella settled first.”
Derek put on that gentle, indulgent act again, like he absolutely adored me.
Someone as pure and noble as Maverick couldn’t stand hearing that kind of intimate talk.
Sure enough, Maverick’s face darkened.
But I was right there beside him.
I begged bitterly, “Uncle, don’t believe Derek.”
“Just open the basement door–you’ll see the truth if you open it.”
“Bella’s still waiting for you to save her life…”
God, please let Maverick hear my plea!
But Maverick couldn’t hear me. He pressed his lips tight like he had nothing more to say.
Derek continued, “Uncle, the day after tomorrow is your wedding with Chloe. Paisley and I are so happy for you both.”
“Paisley said she’s really grateful for all you’ve done for her over the years. She wants to give you a $9,999 wedding gift.”
“For lasting love–wishing you and Chloe a lifetime of happiness together.”

Chapter 4
Hearing this, Maverick seemed to zone out a bit.
Chloe smiled and jumped into the conversation.
“Good to hear Paisley’s come around.”
“You don’t know–Paisley used to throw fits about not letting Maverick get married, even said if he dared marry someone, she’d kill herself to spite him.”
“Having a kid with you really made Paisley mature.”
“Having another baby’s a good idea too. Kids make Paisley way more independent.”
Even after they hung up, Maverick didn’t notice anything wrong.
Chloe hooked her arm through Maverick’s, coaxing him to leave.
“It’s getting late. We need to get up early tomorrow to check the wedding venue. Let’s go home and rest.”
I frantically blocked their path, screaming and begging Maverick not to leave.
But he couldn’t hear my voice.
Even though I was dead, I could still feel the cold of the night.
On such a freezing night, my Bella lay burning with fever in that ice–cold basement.
How much longer could she hold on?
I didn’t dare think about it, hating my own helplessness.
In my despair, I saw a car slowly approaching from the distance, not even its headlights on.
Even so, I recognized Derek’s car immediately.
“What’s he coming back for?”
Horror and terror made my very soul tremble.
Derek got out of the car, his eyes full of unconcealed murderous intent.
He didn’t even bother closing the car door as he headed straight for the basement.
My heart leaped into my throat.
Just then, Maverick’s cold interrogation came from behind.
“Derek? Why are you back here this late?”
“Why is there blood in your car?”
