Chapter 3
Derek’s steps faltered as he slowly turned around.
Against the light, he stared hard at the small figure curled up in the corner.
“DEREK! Don’t you dare go near my daughter!”
I threw myself at Derek, but just passed right through him.
Bella was terrified, too scared to look at him anymore.
“Bella, tell Daddy what you saw.”
Derek stood there holding those bags, approaching step by step.
His shadow stretched longer and longer across the floor, swallowing both my soul and my daughter.
“STAY BACK!”
“DON’T YOU HURT BELLA!”
I pushed at him, screaming with everything I had.
But it was useless.
I watched Derek crouch in front of Bella, making my newly awakened baby cry.
“…Waaah, I don’t want Daddy, I want Mommy.”
“I wanna find Mommy…”
Bella cried and shook her head, her cheeks still flushed with fever.
Derek threw one of the black bags on the ground. It rolled a few times before stopping in the corner.
“Your mommy’s right there. She’ll keep you company.”
Derek coldly dropped that line and ignored everything else.
He quickly cleaned up and rushed out of the villa with “me“.
The sound of him gunning the engine caught the attention of the neighboring villa.
Maverick walked out his front door into the yard, staring at the distant taillights.
Chloe followed him outside. “Looks like Derek picked up Paisley and the kid.”
But Maverick frowned, looking annoyed.
“Why the hell is Derek driving so fast? Paisley’s gonna get carsick.”
Chloe’s smile faded.
“People change. Maybe after getting married, Paisley doesn’t get carsick anymore.”
“Derek’s the husband you personally picked for Paisley. You chose him because he loved her–that’s why you felt safe marrying her off to him.”

Chapter 3
“He should care even more about her getting carsick than you do.”
Maverick’s frown deepened, unease gnawing at him.
After thinking it over, he decided to call Paisley Morrison.
The ringtone exploded through the basement.
“BELLA! Wake up! It’s Maverick! We’re saved!”
I tried desperately to wake my sleeping daughter.
Derek had scared Bella unconscious again before he left.
But I was grateful–Derek hadn’t noticed the phone in the corner when he came back.
“Bella! Please wake up!”
In the darkness, Bella finally opened her eyes.
Thank God, she finally had enough strength to prop up her tiny body and crawl toward the ringing phone.
The moment she answered, Bella burst into tears.
“Waaah… Mommy! Mommy!”
The three–year–old couldn’t take it anymore.
My heart shattered as I held her. “My baby girl, Mommy’s here, I’m here…”
“Mommy’s always with you.”
Soon, Maverick’s shocked voice came through the phone.
“Bella, where are you?“!
Bella was only three, sick with fever, and scared out of her mind–she could barely speak.
“Basement… Mommy… Mommy…”
Maverick sounded panicked too. “What basement? You’re in a basement?”
“Don’t be scared, I’m coming to find you.”
I felt hope flooding through me.
I stayed by Bella’s side, not daring to move an inch, anxiously praying for Maverick to hurry.
“Maverick, please hurry–save my daughter, she can’t hold on much longer.”
A few minutes later, I heard heavy footsteps approaching in the yard, someone pushing at the basement door.
“Bella? It’s Maverick. I’m here to get you guys.”
