Chapter 2
Chapter 2
I hadn’t seen Maverick Rhodes in five years.
He just stared at me like that, completely expressionless.
“Uncle, did you come to get Bella?”
I looked at him with desperate hope.
But Maverick didn’t answer.
Chloe got out of the car too, following his gaze toward me, looking confused.
“Maverick? There’s nothing at the gate–what’re you staring at?”
My heart clenched as I realized I was dead. Of course Maverick couldn’t see me.
Maverick looked away, his eyes cold and distant:
“Derek mentioned last time he was moving away with his wife and kid.”
Chloe took his hand, gazing at him with that gentle smile.
“I know you act tough with Paisley, but you still care about her.”
“We already sent Derek the wedding invitation, right? Paisley will be there the day after tomorrow.”
Maverick looked back at Chloe tenderly. “Come on, let’s go home.“.
During those five years of Derek’s abuse, I’d dreamed countless times of hearing Maverick say those words to me.
My throat burned with unshed tears.
Watching them walk away hand in hand, I frantically tried to follow.
But somehow, I couldn’t leave the villa grounds.

All I could do was stand at the gate screaming, praying Maverick could hear my soul’s desperate plea.
“MAVERICK! I’m right here! RIGHT HERE!”
“Please just come inside and look! Save my poor baby girl!”
“She’s burning up with fever–if she doesn’t get help soon, she’ll die too…”
The two figures in the distance stopped.
Before I could get excited, I watched Maverick and Chloe enter the villa next door.
All these years, Maverick had been living right next to me.
So close, yet he never came to see me once.
I had no tears left to cry as I drifted back to the basement in despair.
The basement echoed only with Bella’s pained whimpers in her sleep.

Chapter 2
“Mommy… hurts… hurts…”
I pressed as close to my daughter as I could, hoping to bring down her fever somehow.
“Bella, Mommy’s gonna find a way. Mommy’s gonna get you out of here.”
Maybe the reason my soul hadn’t been taken was because even death pitied us–leaving me here to save Bella.
Suddenly, I heard the front gate creaking.
As footsteps got closer and closer, I could tell Derek was back–he was on the phone.
“We didn’t fight, Uncle. Paisley was happy eating cake with our kid today, calling me a wonderful husband.”
He was lying again, that bastard was always putting on an act.
He knew well I was allergic to strawberry cake, but he shoved it down my throat anyway.
When I couldn’t eat it, he smashed the bottle and stabbed me with it.
The broken glass pierced straight through my heart. I died in agony.
“Uncle, I’m home late ‘cause I was setting up our new place.“.
“You know how picky Paisley gets–one little thing goes wrong and she throws a fit. That’s why I’m just getting back to pick them up.”
“We’ll be at your wedding the day after tomorrow, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of Paisley.”
Take care of me? He was planning to beat the hell out of me again.
Sure enough, the basement door swung open the next second.
Derek stood in the doorway, staring at my body with that sick smile.
“Paisley Morrison? We’re moving. Far away from Maverick Rhodes.”
His voice was ice–cold and completely insane.
“Maverick’s getting married the day after tomorrow. He’ll never give a shit about you again.”
He grinned wickedly as he rushed over, trying to drag my body upright.
But my lifeless corpse was too heavy.
Derek stumbled and fell to his knees.
He got pissed and slapped me hard across the face.
“PAISLEY! Quit playing dead on me!”
But his hand came back covered in blood.
Finally, he panicked, reaching up to check if I was breathing.
After a moment, he pulled his hand back.
“…Dead. You’re actually dead.”
I watched Derek’s face grow darker and darker as he slowly left the basement.

Chapter 2
Dread crept into my heart.
Soon enough, Derek returned.
He was carrying a chainsaw and various cleaning supplies.
I was absolutely horrified: “Psycho! Derek’s completely lost his mind!”
Derek was eerily calm as he aimed the chainsaw at my body.
“Paisley Morrison, you’re never escaping me.”
His voice was hoarse like a demon whispering.
I watched helplessly as everything happened, powerless to stop it.
In the end, everything was stuffed into several black bags.
Derek grabbed the bags and headed for the door.
Suddenly a tiny, trembling voice came from the corner.
“Da… Daddy? Is that you?”
