Chapter 5
“You… Sophia?”
Lucian was the first to regain his senses. He staggered forward a few steps, eyes locked on Sophia.
This man, a ruthless executioner on the battlefield, now stared at her with eyes so bloodshot and filled with hatred, he resembled a
ghost.
Maryanne’s face turned ghostly pale. The rag she had been gripping slipped from her hands, and she collapsed onto the ground along
with it.
I stood at the back of the crowd and slowly wiped the mud from my face.
What a spectacle this had been–how could I enjoy such a brilliant farce all by myself?
Look now. Everyone was watching. That was the real entertainment.
Through the chaos, Alice stared at me with wide, incredulous eyes.
She couldn’t understand how things had gone so wrong. By all accounts, I should’ve been the one exposed, stripped bare before the public.
“M–Miss…”
Alice choked back tears, gazing at me with pitiful, trembling eyes..
Before she could utter another word, I threw myself at her, clinging tightly and speaking first.
“Alice, it’s all my fault–I couldn’t protect you. But Chancellor Leopold lost all control and demanded that you accompany him and the princess. I tried to stop him—I really did!”
I sobbed bitterly, as if I had endured some terrible injustice.
The crowd stood stunned.
I didn’t even have to say much. They were already stitching the “truth” together on their own.
I was the First Minister’s only daughter–nobody would lay a finger on me without reason. Yet here I stood, bruised and bloodied.
They must’ve figured I had stumbled upon the princess and Chancellor’s disgraceful affair, tried to shield my maid, and gotten beaten
for it.
Not only had I been assaulted and humiliated, but I had also been forced to stand watch outside!
“Beast! I’ll kill you!”
Maryanne couldn’t hear another word. When she heard me accuse Leopold of behaving like an animal, she was convinced he had violated Sophia. She seized a sword and lunged at him.
“Ah!”
The blade struck Leopold’s arm, and blood immediately gushed forth.
It took everything I had from two lifetimes to suppress the smile tugging at the corner of my lips.
Serves you right!
Clutching his mangled arm, Leopold let out a guttural scream and writhed on the ground like a pig awaiting slaughter.
“Maryanne! I was drugged–I was framed!”
His eyes burned with malice, locked onto me. From the way he looked at me, I knew clearly–he had been reborn as well.
But Maryanne was beyond reason. She raised her sword again and aimed for his heart.

“Leopold!”
Sophia cried out, forgetting even to cover herself. She scrambled to shield Leopold with her body.
The rag she had just used to cover herself slipped again with the movement.
“Sophia!” Leopold lunged to cover her up once more.
And just like that, the two of them were entangled again before everyone’s eyes.
“Well, well, well. So the feelings are mutual. Then I was the fool, wasn’t I?”
Lucian’s eyes turned crimson with rage. If not for the fact that Sophia was a royal and he couldn’t lay a hand on her, he would’ve chopped them both like vegetables.
“I want this engagement annulled! A woman like that–I, Lucian, wouldn’t touch her with a ten–foot pole!”
“General Courcy, General Courcy-

But he didn’t even look back as he strode away.
“Maryanne, things have gone this far. I know I was drugged and framed, but I’ve still defiled the princess. I am willing to take responsibility and marry her.”
Leopold shot me a smug look as he held Sophia close and made his declaration.
Sophia was so moved, tears welled up in her eyes.
