Chapter 3
“Graham…”
Isabelle looked at me—then suddenly recoiled, shrinking into herself like a frightened child.
“We shouldn’t be doing this… I’d rather stay unconscious forever than hurt someone else!”
With just a glance from Graham, the guard stepped forward and slapped me so hard I hit the floor.
Blackness filled my vision. Blood trickled from the corner of my mouth.
Nheard his voice, sickeningly tender.
“There. Now she can’t see anything.”

My strength drained away. I collapsed on the floor, soaked in cold sweat, the sterile hospital gown clinging to my trembling body. The voices around me faded… until I heard a sigh.
Then I felt myself yanked into his arms.
“Why can’t you just behave?” he murmured.

“Izzy and I… we’ve known each other since we were kids. She’s been bedridden for months. I just want to take care of her. Why can’t you
understand that?”
Is that all this was?
Caring?
Caring enough to get close to me with a hidden purpose.
Caring enough to force himself to have a child with me–iust to wake her up.
Caring enough to take my life for hers.

Graham’s eyes darted to the sweat on my forehead. Panic flickered across his face.
“Hold on, I’ll call the doctor–just stay with me.”
As soon as he rushed out, Isabelle climbed down from the bed.
She kicked me hard in the side.
“Tsk. Poor thing. Your little pup’s blood actually worked.”
She dangled something in front of me.
My baby’s tail.
“Such a pretty tail–perfect as a cat toy for my Snowball. Think of it as punishment–for daring to steal Graham from me.‘
I was still trying to register what she meant-
Then she suddenly stumbled back, her eyes filling with tears.
“Graham! How could you hurt her child for my sake?”
Graham’s gaze flicked briefly to me–then his face hardened.
“I can’t take this anymore!”
She bolted toward the window, her frail body swaying.
Graham’s expression changed in an instant. He leapt forward, clutching her tightly in his arms.

“Don’t do anything stupid! This isn’t your fault, it has nothing to do with you.”
She sobbed helplessly in his embrace.
Then Graham turned to me.
His eyes like blades. That flicker of panic gone without a trace.
“You can have another kid. But Isabelle only has one life.”
His voice turned glacial.
“I pulled you out of hell. You owe me your life. Who the hell are you to blame her?”
I screamed back, throat raw.
“I wish you hadn’t saved me! I’d rather have been sold to the lab, or thrown back to the circus–at least then my child might still be alive!”
His expression darkened.
He shoved Isabelle aside.
“Unbelievable. I gave you everything–food, comfort, safety–and you throw a tantrum over one child?”
He turned to the guard and barked: “Get the stun baton. Let’s remind her what a real research facility feels like.”
Isabelle pretended to hold him back, but he gently pushed her down onto the bed with a reassuring touch.
They dragged me into a blacked–out isolation room. Then came the searing jabs.
Again and again, the electric baton struck. The smell of burning flesh filled the air. My consciousness started to slip away.
Just before I blacked out-
The door slammed open.
“Stop!”
I forced my eyes open.
It was him.
Dr. Marcus Langley.
7
The very man who had once tried to buy me at the auction. The one who’d built that cursed lab.
Graham stood behind him, face like thunder.
Dr. Langley crouched beside me, visibly shaken.
He started to check my wounds–then froze. Something had shifted in his expression.
He gave a bitter laugh.
“So… you went and seduced someone else while I was gone?”
Then his voice turned sharp. Cold.
“She’s a rare specimen. Her blood just triggered a breakthrough in the lab. You nearly destroyed my life’s work!” Graham’s eyes narrowed. For the first time, he noticed the extent of my injuries. Regret flickered, but only briefly.
“She’s a werewolf,” he muttered. “They’re durable. Hard to kill.”
Then he yanked me away from Dr. Langley.

“Her blood is valuable. And your sister is already awake.”
Dr. Langley grabbed my other arm, desperate.
“I found a mutated gene in her blood. It could-”
Graham’s face tensed, trying to process what that meant.
But before he could speak, Isabelle appeared at the doorway.
She let out a dismissive laugh.
“Mutated gene? Come on, Marcus. You’re losing your mind. She’s just a girl, not some comic book mutation.”
Then she looked at him sharply.
“Unless… you’ve got a thing for her? Is that why you want to take her away?”
Graham’s grip tightened instantly.
“Don’t even think about it. She belong to me.”
“I fund your lab with six figures a month, and you pull this disgusting stunt?”
He pulled out his phone and snapped: “Freeze all of the Langley Foundation’s funding–effective immediately.”
Isabelle gave me a venomous glare, then looped her arm through Graham’s.
“Don’t be mad, Graham. My brother’s just confused, that’s all. Besides… it always takes two to tango.”
Her eyes slid toward me with calculated malice.
Suddenly, a rough hand grabbed my chin.
Graham’s fingers clenched hard enough to crush bone.
“You think a few lies will let you run off with some other man?”
“Turning into a werewolf–what a joke. Even if you did, I tamed you once. I can do it again. So can anyone else.”
His eyes blazed.
I knew he didn’t believe me. Not for a second.
What he didn’t know–what none of them knew–was that it wasn’t his doing that stabilized me. That helped me shift and hide the monster within.
It had been a kind researcher, long ago. Someone who pitied my suffering, and given me a cure. A serum that kept my wolf dormant.
“Ah-!”
Suddenly, Isabelle clutched her head and screamed.
“Graham–it hurts! My head!”
I felt a small, grim smile tug at the corner of my mouth.
This… is only the beginning.
