Lucas had chased after her with everything he had–planned the perfect confession. In the end, he didn’t even get to hold her hand before she was gone.
His eyes softened with a rare trace of regret, and he sighed.
Hannah had asked him once who he loved more.
At the time, he really couldn’t answer.
Stella was his first love–the only girl he’d truly go
gone all out for.
Hannah, on the other hand, was the most enchanting woman he’d met in recent years–gentle, beautiful.
There was no real way to compare
them.
But if Hannah asked him again, he’d say it was her.
Because Lucas was a realist.
And the truth was.. he didn’t love Stella anymore.
It had been over ten years. Who spends a decade hung up on someone who’s no longer even alive?
He got into the car taking him back to the hotel. This variety show wasn’t being filmed in Ashford, so he’d have to stay in a hotel for the night.
He scrolled through more messages.
Jackson had responded again: “Just got out of class. I swear, she looks just like her. I’m not lying. The more I think about it.
the more sure I am!”
Lucas typed back lazily: “She’s been gone for over a decade. Back then I was in high school, and you were, what, five or six? No way you remember that clearly. You’ve got the wrong person.”
Jackson replied: “Yeah, I was young–but your phone wallpaper was her picture for years after she died. I used your phone to play games all the time. How could I not remember her face?”
Lucas had gone to college in Ashford too. He didn’t live on campus and canis home every day.
That memory made Lucas frown slightly.
Was I really that sentimental back then? I’d totally forgotten.
Then Jackson sent another message: “Though that didn’t stop you from flirting with other girls.”
Lucas: “Shut it. That last part was very unnecessary.”
Now that Jackson mentioned it.. Lucas did remember.
For a few years in college, his phone wallpaper had always been Stella’s photo.
Whenever anyone asked, he’d say it was some model from the internet.
But the truth was, it wasn’t just about missing her.
There had been other reasons.
His eyes dimmed slightly at the thought.
Jackson sent another message: “Anyway, just saying–this girl who talked to me had a really unique way of striking up conversation. She’s not even a student at our school. I must be getting seriously attractive!”
