Chapter 6
Emily sat in the living room with her in–laws, the atmosphere eerily quiet.
After a night’s reflection, her in–laws had come to terms with the situation. They knew Harold didn’t love Emily. Holding her hand, their eyes filled with guilt.
“Emily, our family has held you back for five years. We can’t keep holding you back for the rest of your life.”
“We agree to the divorce. Don’t worry, Harold will give you the house and car… consider it compensation.”
They then turned to Harold.
“Talk things through with Emily properly.”
Emily and Harold walked to the courtyard gate. Under the dim streetlight, their shadows stretched long across the ground.
He slowly began, “Sophia’s ex–husband was an abusive drunk. I only wanted to stay in England to ensure her safety.”
“As for the lock screen, I’ve always used that one, never changed it. If it bothers you, I’ll switch to your photo.”
Hearing Harold dodge the real issue, Emily suddenly felt so tired.
He seemed to be compromising for himself, but really, he thought she was making a fuss over nothing. Yet it’s the countless little things that push a marriage to its breaking point.

Emily lowered her gaze, whispering softly, “That won’t be necessary. I don’t need it.”
She looked up at Harold’s face.
“Five years married. If you ever cared for me even a little, come with me to file for divorce at dawn.”
Harold seemed to hesitate.
Just then, Sophia’s voice unexpectedly carried over from his parked car nearby.
“Harold! Have you two sorted things out?”
Emily followed the sound and saw Sophia stepping out of the vehicle, an adhesive bandage on her forehead and fresh scrapes marking her face.
Harold quickly explained.
“Yesterday, Sophia’s ex–husband got bailed out and hit her again. I couldn’t let her stay alone in the UK, so I brought her back.”
Looking at Sophia in the car and then at Harold before her, Emily suddenly understood everything.
She told Harold, “Nine o’clock, City Hall.”
Emily never imagined her divorce from Harold would happen with Sophia present.
“Sure about divorcing? Once it’s done, we’re done for good.”
Standing at the divorce counter, Harold asked casually. He was certain Emily didn’t truly want this.

Otherwise, she wouldn’t be so calm and confident. Emily had liked Harold for six years, she could read his thoughts just from his expression.
With solemn focus, Emily simply responded, “Okay.”
Then she quickly signed her name–Emily. Harold paused, then without further hesitation, signed the divorce papers too.
The entire divorce process took just one hour.
Stepping out of City Hall, holding the thin, light divorce papers, Emily felt as if transported to another lifetime.
Harold suddenly asked, “Where are you heading? I’ll give you a ride.”
Before Emily could answer, Sophia walked straight up to them.
“Harold, I’m not feeling well. Let’s head back now.”
Harold hesitated, glancing at Emily.
Emily said bluntly, “You should take her home. I’ll just grab a cab myself.”
For five years of marriage, she’d always walked alone. Now divorced, she certainly didn’t need his company.
As Emily turned to leave, Harold instinctively grabbed her hand.
“Anything else?”
Harold paused. “Take care of yourself.”
Emily nodded.
When he released her hand, he suddenly noticed her bare ring finger.

Harold froze on the spot.
She’d worn that wedding band since their engagement, never taking it off.
not even for showers.
Just as he started to speak, Sophia approached.
“Emily, thank you for being so considerate.”
“Harold and I will return to England soon. We’ll bring his parents along.”
“After this, it’s best we don’t contact each other anymore.”
Hearing this, Emily smiled and replied to her.
“Don’t worry, I’m not like you.”
“I won’t go back to my ex.”
