Chapter 5
Dawn taxis proved scarce, leaving just twenty minutes before boarding when she reached Edinburgh Airport.
Having navigated the arrival chaos before, Emily moved through check–in and boarding with practiced ease this time.
She’d assumed Harold would accompany her back.
Yet just as she’d flown here alone, now she returned alone.
Before takeoff, Emily sent Harold a voice message in Spanish:
“Harold, you could’ve been honest with me. No need to keep it bottled up for five years. I know it’s Sophia you truly love–I saw her message.”
“I understand you’re staying in England for her. Even recognized your lock screen–her graduation photo.”
“You should’ve told me earlier. Wouldn’t have wasted five years of your life.”
“Visit when you’re back. We’ll finalize the divorce at City Hall.”
Her thumb pressed send.
Sitting on the plane, Emily couldn’t help but recall the five years she had been married to Harold.
When she had kidney stone surgery and needed family by her bedside, she was alone.

Chapter 5
When she was troubled by students‘ parents, she was alone.

When her car had a flat tire on the road, her phone was dead, and she couldn’t call for help, she was alone.
Even when a light bulb broke or a pipe burst at home, she fixed it all by herself.
Since it was like this, why did she get married?
Emily looked out the window at the blue sky and white clouds, and took off the wedding ring she had worn for five years.
Ten hours later, the plane finally landed at International Gateway Airport.
Emily turned on her phone, and Harold had only sent her one message.
“I’ll talk to you when I get back.”
Emily didn’t reply, just tossed her wedding ring into the airport trash bin.
Back home, her father–in–law and mother–in–law were already waiting at the gate. Knowing she’d returned from England, they’d prepared a lavish spread.
Her father-in–law took her luggage the moment he saw her. Her mother- in–law grasped her hands, peering behind her.
“Emily, where’s Harold? Why are you alone?”
Emily made no attempt to hide it.
“Mom and Dad, I want a divorce from Harold.”
Their faces froze in disbelief.

Clutching Emily’s hands tighter, her mother–in–law couldn’t help asking. “Why? Did Harold mistreat you?”
Under their concerned gaze, Emily recounted everything that happened abroad. Including Harold’s decision to settle permanently in England. His parents were instantly furious.
They calmed Emily down, urging her to eat first before retreating to their
room.
With little appetite, Emily sat alone on the living room sofa when she overheard his mother calling Harold.
“…Emily has been married into our family for five years. Knowing how ́exhausting your doctor job is, she’s tirelessly cared for your father and me. With his diabetes, she’s always fetching medicine, accompanying him to checkups, and preparing separate meals.”
“When I broke my bone last year, she personally bathed me, changed my clothes, and helped me use the bathroom. The doctor said it takes a hundred days to recover, and she cared for me without complaint all that time. By the day my cast came off, Emily had grown noticeably thinner.”
His mother lowered her voice again.
“Don’t think I don’t know about you and Sophia! She abandoned you for her career back then, yet you went chasing after her all the way to Britain -only to find she’d already married there. And now you’re settling down in Britain for her again? Aren’t you pathetic!”
“Harold, have you no conscience? If you care at all about us as your parents, come home immediately! Otherwise, prepare to collect our bodies!”
That very night, Harold boarded a flight back home.
