Caelum watched me and Levin walk off hand in hand, eyes full of unwillingness.
He quickly followed.
Vivienne called after him, but he ignored her completely.
Levin and I had just arrived at Caelum’s place when he caught up too.
He stayed close by, watching me closely.
“Clare, you’re using Levin as a shield, right?
“You’re just mad. I didn’t get the marriage license with you today, so you’re doing this to spite me, aren’t you?”
When I didn’t answer, it was like he made up his mind.
He grabbed my hand.
“Let’s go tomorrow. I swear, nothing will get in the way of us getting that license.”
Levin saw him holding my hand and came over, smacking it away.
“Say what you need to say, but don’t touch my wife.”
Caelum pressed his lips together, forcing down his anger.
I started packing my stuff into a suitcase.
That was when I found one of my lingerie sets open.

“That was brand new. Why did you unwrap it?”
Caelum looked confused.
“Didn’t you wear it already? You had to open it to put it on, right?”
“When did I wear it?”
I’d bought it for our wedding night. I’d just been preparing in advance.
Caelum thought for a moment.
“Three months ago, that rainy night–I was drunk, and you were wearing it when we…”
He stopped mid–sentence.
His pupils shrank slightly, like something hit him.
“That night, I kept trying to stop you from drinking. You wouldn’t listen. I got pissed and went to sleep in the guest room. When did we even…?”
Then it hit me too.
I stopped talking
Like something had slammed into Caelum’s heart, he collapsed to the floor.
His eyes were blank.
Levin sat on the couch playing with his phone.
A video was playing out loud.
But I knew–he was just pretending to watch, pretending not to hear.

Downstairs, Vivienne was coming back.
When she saw me, she scoffed.
Her eyes were full of smug victory.
Levin glanced back at her with the same disdain.
Then he lifted me up and spun me around a few times.
He couldn’t help kissing my lips.
“Honey, I finally married you. I’m so happy.‘
He didn’t skip a single step–proposal, engagement, wedding.

the license.
The next day, I got the paternity results. It matched.
I took a photo and sent it to Caelum.
I saw the typing bubble pop up on his end, but no message ever came.
What could he even say?
He kept accusing me of lying, but now Vivienne was pregnant with his baby.
Sitting at my desk, I thought about their relationship.

“But I forgive you now.
“Can we stop fighting?”
His eyes pleaded with me.
He pulled out his ID from his pocket.
“Let’s get the license now. I promise, we’ll get it. I’ll never leave you again.”
