Drying my tears, I carried Grandma’s ashes back home.
As soon as I set the urn down, Jessica doubled over, complaining of stomach pain.
“Mr. Sullivan,” she explained, “my grandma once told me that mixing a loved one’s ashes with blood could bring a curse upon pregnant women.”
“Maddie brought back grandma’s ashes today, and there’s a cut on her
wrist…”
She shook her head as if trying to reassure herself.
“No, Maddie is too kind to do something like that. It must be just my frail health. Forget I mentioned it, Mr. Sullivan.”
However, Eric continued.
“Maddie, have I been too indulgent with you lately? How could you be cruel enough to hurt an unborn child?”
I answered with a frosty tone, “I was just released today. I didn’t have the chance to locate an appropriate cemetery, so I brought Grandma’s ashes home first.”
“Regarding what Ms. Nottunie mentioned, I’m not aware of anything like that.”
In a voice barely louder than a whisper, Jessica suggested, “Perhaps Maddie didn’t mean for this to happen.”
Eric inquired, “Jessica, did your grandmother mention any solutions?

Would relocating the ashes help?”
Jessica shook her head with a troubled expression.
“No, we have to mix the ashes with animal urine to break the curse.”
Eric turned to the butler and instructed, “Bring Kitty. Let it pee in the urn!”
I quickly moved to protect the urn, pleading desperately, “I swear, I didn’t curse her. Grandma has passed. Please, for the love she showed you all these years, let her rest in peace.
Eric paused for a moment.
Then Jessica cried out, clutching her stomach, “Mr. Sullivan, I’m in so much pain! Please, help save our baby!”
Without further delay, Eric said, “Maddie, the deceased are gone. It’s the living who are important now.‘
He pointed at me and commanded the bodyguards, “Seize her! Don’t let her disrupt things.“”

A group of bodyguards rushed over at the noise, forcing me to the ground.
I was helpless as I watched the cat relieve itself in grandma’s urn, while Jessica–crouched nearby–could barely conceal her glee.
“Mr. Sullivan, my stomach feels fine now.
I cried out, crawling forward to grasp the urn.
“I’m sorry, Grandma. I’m so, so sorry…‘

I bit my lip hard enough to draw blood as I thought, “Tomorrow night… That’s when your nightmare begins.”
