Chapter 1
The person on the phone got all excited. “I’ll come pick you up!”
Three years later, because my company was expanding, I came back to San Francisco with my child.
I did not expect to bump into Patrick and Sadie Dempsey at the airport. They had just returned to the States.
Patrick handed me a suitcase like it was normal. “You’re pretty thoughtful. How’d you know Sadie and I were flying back today?”
Before I could even say anything, he frowned and said, “Why do you always suck at replying to texts? But you’re always super quick when it comes to asking for money.”
I raised my eyebrows. When I left three years ago, I tossed my phone to a random homeless guy. No clue who was replying to his messages all this
time.
Not wanting to deal with him, I tossed the suitcase back at him.
“You’ve got the wrong person.”
I turned to leave, but then Sadie saw the sleeping child in the stroller and suddenly ran over crying.
“Darling, mommy is back. It’s all my fault that I met your daddy too late, so I can’t be with you properly.”
Then, even though I tried to stop her, she grabbed the kid anyway.
The moment he woke up–grumpy just like his dad–he started bawling.

He kicked and squirmed like crazy, and ended up hitting Sadie right in the face with his little foot.

The child started crying and called me “Mommy,” and I caught a flicker of panic and jealousy in her eyes.
I rushed over to take him back and started to explain, “He’s not your
kid…”
However, before I could finish, Sadie stepped back and cried out, “Tara, you promised me you’d take good care of my child. How is he still this tiny and skinny at three years old?”
Then she looked down at the boy in her arms, all gentle and loving. “It’s all Mommy’s fault. I haven’t been with you these past three years. I can’t all Mommy’s fault. I haven’t been with yo imagine how much you’ve suffered.”
I was so done that I almost rolled my eyes. I was just about to say, “You got it all wrong. He’s actually two…”
And then out of nowhere, I felt a sharp sting on my face.
I turned in shock to see Patrick, his face twisted with anger. “Tara, I can’t believe find out you’ve been abusing my and Sadie’s son for three years?
En comptes you are. You swore you’d look lara. I can’t
him, and now I
“I’ve given you millions in living expenses, and you couldn’t even feed him?
“Look at him! Skin and bones, darker than ever. He doesn’t look anything like my heir!”
By now, a crowd had gathered, whispering, staring, and some even pulling out their phones to stream.
Someone yelled, “Everyone look! A horrible nanny caught abusing a rich kid!”

I scowled and grabbed the crying boy back from Sadie, my heart aching.
I did not even have time to explain, and Sadie suddenly shrieked again, “Tara, how could you let him sleep on a pillow filled with seedpods? Don’t you know I’m allergic?
“No wonder he’s so thin–he’s allergic just like me! How did you not notice this at all?
“The poor thing can’t even talk yet, and he’s been suffering for three years. But I guess it makes sense because he’s not your biological child after all…”
Then she dropped to her knees like some heartbroken mother, sobbing, “Please, just give me back my son. I went through so much just to bring him into the world.”
“What a joke. You left him at my doorstep still covered in amniotic fluid like a package.” I scoffed internally.
“Then, you and Patrick flew off on your honeymoon without a care, letting the whole world laugh at me.
“If I hadn’t heard him crying that night, he probably would’ve frozen to
death.
“You didn’t even bother feeding your own kid back then, and now you’re acting like the world’s most loving parents?”
I frowned and gently put the child back in his stroller.
Patrick snapped, “Tara, give the kid back to Sadie. You clearly can’t raise him. You can forget about being my wife!”
I gave him a sarcastic smile and said, “As if I care. I would’ve remarried years ago if I wanted to.”
