Chapter 67
“This is how far I can go with you.” Beta Richard said to Steve as
they got to the pack’s borders. “I can’t go any further.” He added.
Beta Richard’s expression turned serious, his tone firm too. He
stepped closer to Steve’s, leaning in as he spoke into his ear, “You
know what is at stake here. The pack’s future is in your hands,
please don’t disappoint us. I’m sure you know what you need to
do already.”
“Yes, I do sir. Thank you so much for your trust in me. I promise
you that I won’t disappoint. I’ll do everything I’m supposed to do
and make you proud.” Steve assured him, and Beta Richard
nodded, a little smile on his face.
“Throughout your journey, always remind yourself that you are not only doing this for yourself, but you’re doing it for your
people too.” Beta Richard placed a reassuring hand on Steve’s
right shoulder.
“From here on, you’re on your own. A lot of distractions might come your way, but remain focused. Be very careful and remember everything I have said. Follow every instruction.” He
adviced Steve, tapping his shoulder and Steve nodded in
understanding.
Chapter 67
Beta Richard bade him goodbye and left, leaving Steve to begin
his journey to the ancient werewolf city to retrieve the emblem
of leadership. This had been the custom for many years and it
has been passed down from generation to generation.
Before any heir of the Alpha can be deemed fit to be the leader of the pack, they have to embark on a journey to the ancient city
where they would be tested. If they pass and are able to retrieve
the emblem successfully, there will be no hindrance to being the
Alpha of the pack. But if such an heir is unable to retrieve the
emblem and is defeated, he will never be able to leave the city
until he is able to defeat someone else.
So for Steve, in his quest to become the next Alpha of the pack,
his journey to the ancient werewolf city began.
BACK AT THE PACK
“Do you think he will be able to make it?” Alpha Marcus asked
Beta Richard as they both sat down in the court, his voice laced with concern.!
Beta Richard sat up, his eyes locked on Alpha Marcus as he
spoke. “I believe he will be able to.” He said firmly. “Steve is
strong and wise. I believe he should be able to navigate the
challenges.” Beta Richard added.
Alpha Marcus sighed, “I hope so too.” He said, his gaze drifting

towards the window. “But time will tell.” He muttered.
Beta Richard nodded thoughtfully, “I think it’s good that you are allowing Steve to do this now, and not waiting any longer,
because he really needs to be prepared for the task ahead.”
Alpha Marcus furrowed his brow as he remembered the recent
attack on the pack.
“And especially with Shadow Moon pack’s most recent scheme.”
He said, his tone serious as he spoke. “For all we care, they might
be forging alliances with other smaller packs to strengthen their
numbers and be united with them for when they will launch a
united attack on us. Don’t you think so, Richard?”
“Exactly. We can’t underestimate their intentions.” He paused
and thought for a short moment, “They might even have new
tricks up their sleeves as we speak and I’m sure they’ll stop at
nothing to achieve their goals.” He added.
“Very true, Richard. You’re very right.” Alpha Marcus said in
support. “Now you see why Steve’s journey is indeed important,
and we need him to succeed so we can form our alliance with
other supportive packs too.”
“True. By all means, Alpha.” He replied, nodding

Alpha Marcus thought for a while and began speaking again,

Chapter 67
“You know, I never knew they were going to try to attack us when I told Steve about the journey he needed to embark on. I just felt it was the right time for him to do it and I’m glad that all is working out the way I planned it.”
“Yes, I just hope that he is able to come back with the emblem of pack leadership. That way, his position as the future alpha of the pack will be solidified, and the pack will unite behind him.” Beta
Richard stated, his eyes gleaming with determination.
Alpha Marcus nodded, his expression firm as he spoke, “And
with the emblem, he’ll have the authority to make the tough
decisions needed to protect our pack from Shadow Moon’s
threats when the time comes.”
“True.” Beta Richard muttered as he began to think hard.
His gaze turned to Alpha Marcus, his thoughts, still racing. Seeing his expression, Alpha Marcus knew he had something to
say.
“What is it, Richard? You look like you have something on your
mind.” Alpha Marcus asked him.
“I’ve been thinking…” He paused for a short moment and then
continued, “Perhaps we should send a small group of warriors to
escort him back, once he has retrieved the emblem. We can’t
risk Shadow Moon ambushing him en route. You know if the

emblem gets into the wrong hands, it’s going to be a terrible
disaster.” He suggested and stared at Alpha Marcus for his
response.
Alpha Marcus’s brow furrowed and he sighed before speaking,
“I agree with you, but we’ll need to choose warriors who won’t
draw attention to themselves. Secrecy is key in matters like
this.”
“Exactly. I can ask the captain of the warriors to select the best
warriors, alongside himself, and they can head to the borders on
the fifth day and wait until Steve arrives, so they can escort him
back safely.” Beta Richard explained his idea carefully.

“Okay, that’s a perfect plan. That way he won’t be attacked
before they get there on the last day, right?” Alpha Marcus
asked, trying to make sure he understood Beta Richard’s
analysis properly.
“Yes, Alpha.” He answered, nodding his head confidently.

“Good. That’s a great plan.” He commended him, but he suddenly
thought about something.
“I think you need to speak to the guards on daily patrol. They
need to intensify their efforts, ensuring nothing goes past them
without their knowledge. They need to be more alert now
because a lot is at stake.” He explained to his Beta.
Chapter 67
“Yes, I’ll definitely do that.” Beta Richard assured him.
“I’m guessing you already have an idea of why I said so?” He
asked him, catching onto the fact that
“Yes, I think I do. Seeing as Steve has gone on a quest, Shadow
Moon’s spies might still be lurking around. They possibly might
have been trying to get information out or into the pack.” Beta
Richard explained and Alpha Marcus nodded proudly.
He smiled, “I knew you were going to figure it out already.” He
said, and Beta Richard smiled.
“One has to be smart, because we have to be many steps ahead
of them. Beta Richard replied and Alpha Marcus nodded
happily.

“You can get to work immediately.” Alpha Marcus ordered him,
and he bowed and left immediately.
AT STEVE’S HOUSE

Megan and Veronica sat on the sofa, both lost in their thoughts,
but one thing was similar; they both were worried about Steve.
Although he didn’t give them the full details of what the journey
was all about, they knew he was out on a very important
journey which could cost him a lot if he wasn’t careful.
“Do you think he’ll be safe?” Veronica asked, sounding really

worried.
“I hope he will be. We need to be positive.” Megan answered,
trying to hide her worry for Steve too.
They both sighed and Megan’s phone chimed. She checked it and
it was a message from her father who wanted her back home
because of her safety.
She sighed. “I have to go now. My dad wants me back home.
Since Steve is not around for now, he knows I have no business
being here.”
“I understand. It’s fine. You can go.” Veronica replied, calmly.
“I’m sorry I won’t be able to keep you company for a while.” She
said, sadly. “Will you be fine on your own for days?” She asked.
“Come on. Of course, I will definitely be fine. There is really no
problem.” Veronica assured her.
“Don’t worry, Steve will be back before we know it and I’ll be
back too.” She said, with a slight smile, trying to cheer Veronica
- up.
As she was about to leave, she turned around, “You should be
careful. The pack’s security will be tighter now than before.
Please just be careful.” She warned Veronica who nodded in
understanding.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be careful. I’ll turn off my phone too.” She
assured Megan, who nodded.
“I’ll lock the door as usual. I think Steve’s key should be here
somewhere.” She said, looking around.
“Oh, that’s it, right there.” She pointed at the single key, lying on
the shelf.
“I don’t think there’s anything else I want to say. So I’ll be on my way now.” She said on a final note and with that, she left.
“All alone again.” Veronica muttered to herself as she made her
way into the room.
