Chapter 59
Steve jumped off the bed, shocked and stood metres away from
the bed. The hand which grabbed his leg was no longer in view
by the time he jumped off the bed.
Confused, he began to think about what Beta Richard said
before he left.
“Could there really be an intruder in the house?” He thought to himself as he gradually approached the bed once again. This time, determined to face whoever it was who was hiding
underneath the bed.
He gradually and carefully knelt to the ground, ready to catch whoever it was who had the effrontery to come into his house
to scare him.
1
Peeping, he was surprised to see Veronica under the bed,
laughing at him. She had laid down there, with her hands
covering her mouth, to make sure he didn’t hear any sound she
made.
“Oh my goodness. Veronica!” He exclaimed, surprised and
relieved at the same time.
“What are you doing there?” He asked as he helped her out of
Chapter 59
there.
“Hiding.” She replied, still laughing.
“Hiding from who?” He inquired.
“From whoever that person you came home with, was. I couldn’t
let him see me, you know.” She answered and he nodded,
understandingly.
Immediately after Veronica saw Beta Richard approaching the
house with Steve, she ran into the room to hide. Knowing that
she couldn’t afford to let him see her, else she would put not just
herself, but also Steve in trouble.
“And so of all the places in this house, you decided to hide under
the bed?” Steve teased her. “I can’t believe I almost got scared.”
He said, unable to believe that she actually scared him and
Veronica scoffed.
“You almost got scared or you were really scared?” She asked,
gazing at him.
“I wasn’t.” He replied, avoiding her gaze.
“Lies.” She said, confidently. “You were definitely scared. Look at
you trying to lie.” She mocked and started laughing again.
“Well, I was caught off guard. What were you expecting?” Steve
Chapter 59
replied, in his defense.
“Maybe an immediate reaction.” She shrugged. “Like picking a
said you
weapon to defend yourself or something. I thought you learnt martial arts at some point?” She said, as she took her seat
on the bed.
“Whoa! I just got back after being locked up for a while. The last thing I’ll carry around is a weapon.” He rolled his eyes at her. “And yes, I did learn martial arts.” He added, with a joking sneer.
“Whatever!” Veronica rolled her eyes at him and he gasped,
holding his chest.
“Wow. That’s one weird way of welcoming me back after being gone for so long. Oh my heart. I can’t believe this.” He began to talk dramatically and Veronica, knowing that he was kidding,
couldn’t help but smile.
“Can you quit the drama? We both know you’re just being
unnecessarily dramatic right now.” She said, laughing and Steve
took his seat beside her.
“Welcome back. How have you been?” She asked him and he
sighed.
“As you can see, I’m fine. I’m hale and hearty.” He replied with a
smile, masking his true emotions.
Chapter 59
“I’m sorry that all that had to happen to you. I’m really sorry.”
Veronica said, her tone laced with a hint of sadness as she stared
at Steve.
“Come on, It’s fine. It’s not like you’re the cause anyway. You had
nothing to do with it. So, don’t be sorry about it. It’s fine.” He said
calmly, and Veronica sighed, with guilt written all over her face.
“You know you’re definitely the cause of this problem.” The
strange menacing voice in her head suddenly began to speak,
transporting her into another realm.
“Your presence alone in this pack is the cause of the tension and
unrest that has been happening.” The voice continued. “You’re
an outsider, a stranger and a threat to the pack’s balance. Your
very existence is a mistake.” It continued, not holding back.
“No, No, that’s not true.” Veronica muttered, leaving Steve
surprised. ⠀⠀
He had been talking to her about who Beta Richard was, but
didn’t know she wasn’t paying attention because she was
already hearing strange things.
“Vee? Are you okay?” He asked, calmly but she didn’t respond.
She just kept muttering inaudible words as the voice kept
threatening her.
Chapter 59
She could hear the voice sneering at her, mocking her as it spoke further,
“You think they care about you? Wait until he finds out that you’re the cause of his predicament. You, a weak omega. Your weakness is a liability, a problem to everyone who crosses paths with you.”
The voice then becomes louder, “You can’t deceive them for much longer, because soon they will see you for who you are; a danger, a curse and a threat to their very survival. You better
leave now before you ruin their lives.” It then laughed with
scorn and mockery.
“No!” She screamed out loud, and at that same time, Steve,
grabbing her shoulder and calling her name, louder, snapped her
out of the eerie trance, his touch and voice, breaking the hold of
the voice on her mind.
Her eyes snapped open, and she began to gasp continuously in
fear, even as she found herself staring into Steve’s concerned
eyes.
“Vee, you’re alright. You’re fine. Calm down.” He said as he tried
to make her calm, his grip on her shoulders tightening.
“Just breathe.” He helped her breathe through the process and
after a while she became calm and immediately burst into tears.
Chapter 59
“Hey, what’s wrong?” He asked, concerned and confused.
With a shaky voice, she said, “I can’t be here.”
“What? What do you mean by that?” He asked her, his
confusion intensifying. “What happened?”
Facing him, she said again, “I can’t be here any more. I need to go.
I have to leave to avoid any more trouble.”
Surprised, he kept questioning her, “Go where? Come on, you’re acting strange. What is going on?” but she didn’t respond to any
of his questions.
She got up and began to pack up her belongings but Steve rushed to stop her, “You can’t just leave like that. It is too risky
and you have nowhere to go.”
“I’ll be fine. I’ll sort myself out, don’t worry about me.” She
replied, but Steve wasn’t ready to back down. He was ready to
find out whatever it was that was bothering her.
He grabbed her by her shoulders again, his fingers digging
gently into her shoulders as he looked deeply into her eyes.
“Can you calm down for a moment, please?” He asked her and as
of being hypnotized, she obeyed and took her seat on the bed
once again.
Chapter 59
“What is going on? Please talk to me. Please.” He urged, and she
began to cry again.
“Please stop crying. I don’t know what is going on, but if you tell
me, we might be able to find a solution to it. You can’t just up
and leave just like that. You know this.” He tried to convince her.
“That’s just it, there is no solution. You can’t solve it.” She said,
amidst sobs.
“But tell me what it is. You can’t be so sure that there is no
solution.” He replied, not believing.
“I know I’ve not been here because I’ve been locked up and a lot
has happened since then but please, let me help you.”
“That’s the problem. You can’t help me.
“But why?” He asked, his tone filled with complete worry and
concern.
“Because I am the problem.” She blurted out, and Steve was
thrown into another whirlwind of confusion.
“I don’t understand what you’re talking about.” He said to her,
looking confused.
“I said I’m the problem. I am the cause of all the problems your
pack has been facing.” She cried.
Chapter 59
Totally taken aback, Steve had to ask her if she knew what she
was saying.
“Is this a prank or something? I don’t understand what is going
on here.” He uttered.
“Can’t you see it?” She asked him, with tears in her eyes.
“See what?” He asked her, still looking confused.
“Can’t you see all that has happened since I got here? Can’t you see that it’s been one problem or another.” She told him but he
didn’t believe.
“Wait, so you’re telling me that you’re the cause of the whole
problems?” He asked, trying to make sure he understood what
she had been saying.
“Yes.” She said, quietly, thinking that Steve had finally gotten
what she was saying.
“And who told you this?” He asked further, trying to understand
better.
“I know it. I’ve seen it happen. It happened in my previous pack
too. Everyone there knows that I’m the sole cause of all their
predicaments.” She explained, hiding away the information
about the voice and what it kept telling her. “Even my best friend died because of me. I really am a curse.” She added, and
Chapter 59
began to cry again.
“I need to leave before something more terrible happens to you or anyone in this pack.” She said, and tried to get up again, but Steve gently pulled her back to sit down.
“Well, I’m sorry but I don’t agree with you.” He said, still holding
her hand for a few seconds more.
“What!” She exclaimed, “Don’t you get it? I said I am-”
“I know what you said. I mean I heard everything you said but I refuse to believe that any of that is true.” He said calmly but
seriously.
“Why would you even believe that you are a curse? That you’re the cause of everything that has been happening in this pack?”
He asked, unable to believe all she had said about herself.
“But it’s true.” She tried to convince him with her words but he
blatantly refused.
“Don’t you know that everything that has happened is just a
mere coincidence?” He tried to make her see things from his
perspective.
“For instance, about me being locked up, it was a punishment for
what I did wrong. Yes, I’ve known Trey for years, but truth be
told, he has been an asshole and so he got what he deserved,
Chapter 59
which got me punished, but I’m happy that I did what I did. I don’t blame myself for it and I don’t feel bad about it.” He
explained to her, and she listened carefully.
“And about the fire incident, an enemy of the pack was behind
it, and investigations are ongoing. I’m sure the perpetrator
would be found soon. So tell me, how is that any of that your
fault?” He said, with raised eyebrows.
“Did you punch Trey in the face?” He asked, and she shook her
head.
“Did you push me to fight him?” He asked again, and she shook
her head.
“Did you start the fire?” He asked one more time, and she shook
her head.
“Exactly, can you see that none of this is any of your fault?” He
said to her, his gaze not leaving her eyes.
“But it was because i-” She tried to justify her words, but he
didn’t allow her finish.
“It is not your fault!” He said, firmly, raising his voice a little.
“Besides, I’m sure I told you on the first day we met, that you
shouldn’t speak so negatively about yourself.” He reminded her,
“Can you remember?” He asked and she nodded affirmatively.
Chapter 59
“You need to stop blaming yourself for all the misfortunes and
mishaps that befall others. Only then will you be able to move a
life free of fear and regrets.” He advised her and thankfully he
was able to finally convince her. She then finally nodded in
agreement.
“So please don’t talk about leaving, because you’ll only put
yourself in harms way.” He told her and she nodded again.
“Also, please wipe your tears and be at peace. I’m just waiting for
the right time to tell the Alpha about you. Maybe if you start
going out and getting along with other members of the pack,
you’ll stop thinking you’re that you’re the cause of people’s
problems.” He said on a final note and got up to get a towel. He
handed her the clean towel to wipe her tears with.
Right at that moment, there was a loud knock on the door and
Veronica’s heart began to beat fast, thinking that something bad
was about to happen again.
The knock came again, louder than the first and she and Steve
exchanged glances before he walked out of the room.
