Chapter 57
FIRE DAWN PACK
Two weeks rolled by so quickly and it was now time for Steve to
be let out of the dungeon.
“Good afternoon Beta Richard.” They all greeted him as soon as
they saw him and he nodded slightly in response.
“Steve, it’s time to leave. Let’s get you out of here.” Beta Richard
said as he approached Steve with one of the guards.
Steve scoffed, “Oh, he finally wants to let me out?” He said, with
a menacing look on his face.
“What were you expecting? To be here forever?” Beta Richard tackled Steve’s question and Steve shrugged, unperturbed.
“Open the gates.” Beta Richard ordered the guard, who immediately did as he was told, finally letting Steve out.
“Damn, you look rough.” Beta Richard teased and Steve rolled
his eyes at him, jokingly.
“Glad to finally have you out.” Beta Richard said again and Steve
smiled.
Chapter 57
“Are you trying to say you have missed me?” Steve asked with a
tiny smile.
“Miss you? You wish.” Beta Richard replied, giving a funny
expression. Steve couldn’t help but laugh.
Although his relationship with his father was really strained
and they didn’t get along, Steve got along well with Beta Richard
instead. In fact, he respected him as a mentor.
“It wasn’t easy to get you out of here and you have Megan’s
father and I to thank for it. So, you need to act appropriately and
ensure you do everything you can so that you don’t end up
coming back here, because I can’t assure you that I’ll be able to
convince the Alpha again.” Beta Richard said with a serious look
and Steve nodded and followed him calmly.
As they walked away, Steve waved at the others that were left there in the dungeon. He had formed a type of friendship with
them over the past weeks that he was there, sharing the food that was brought to him with them and also engaging them in various conversations. He also had the opportunity of asking
some of them what their offences were. While some confessed
that they deserved to be there, some other ones revealed that
they were wrongfully framed.
As they got out, Beta Richard pulled Steve to a corner, and began
to talk to advice him,
Chapter 57
“Look Steve, I understand that the relationship you have with
your father is this rebellious attitude of yours has to stop. Your defiance won’t solve anything at all, instead, it’s only going to
divide the pack. It will only show seeds of discord amidst the pack. You’re next in line for the leadership of this pack and you
need to start acting like the leader you’re about to become. It’s time to take responsibility.”
“Someone like my son should see you and make you his role
model, don’t you think? He should see what you’re doing and try
to emulate.” Beta Richard added, while Steve remained quiet.
His eyes locked onto Steve’s eyes as he continued, “Or what kind
of leader do you want to be? What kind of leader do you want
the pack to see you as?” He asked him, his tone firm, yet filled
with concern. “A leader who divides his own pack or a leader
who unites all, keeping every member in one bond. A reckless
leader or a leader who brings hope and prosperity to the pack. A
leader who endangers his people or one who protects his people
and serves them with compassion and strength.”
“Which one do you really want to be?” He asked and as Steve
was about to answer him, he interrupted him.
“I don’t want you to answer me. I need you to ponder on it and give an answer in your heart.” He said, poking a finger at Steve’s
chest.
Chapter 57
Steve shifted uncomfortably, his gaze dropping to the ground.
He could feel Beta Richard’s word piercing through every fiber
in him.
“The ball is in your court. Your attitude, your character will
determine how far you’ll go. And I’m sure you know that the
people are watching you.” Beta Richard said again and Steve
nodded, with a remorseful expression.
“Think about it, Steve, You have the potential to be a great
leader. Don’t allow this pent up anger and resentment you feel
towards your father consume you.” Beta Richard said on a final
note, leaving Steve straying away in his thoughts.
“Phew! I think I’ve said enough now.” Beta Richard said suddenly
in a bid to ease up the seriousness and tension on the
atmosphere. This also snapped Steve out of his thoughts.
“We should go now. You obviously need to freshen up.” Beta
Richard said, holding his nose.
“Wait, are you trying to imply that I stink right now?” Steve asked jokingly as he sniffed his clothes but pulled his head back
immediately, making Beta Richard laughed at him.
“You can see that you stink, right?” Beta Richard asked him.
“Yes, I do.” Steve admitted, “I can’t believe I’ve been wearing the
Chapter 57
same clothes every day for almost a month now. Huh.” He said
again with irritation.
“You see that you truly need to freshen up.” Beta Richard said
and Steve nodded in agreement.
“I truly need to freshen up.” Steve reaffirmed.
“And do me a favour, throw those clothes out.” Beta Richard said
and Steve rolled his eyes jokingly.
“Come on, I’ll drop you off at home.” Beta Richard said and led the way, but Steve, remembering that Veronica was in his
house, immediately refused.
“No, thank you, sir. I don’t think there will be a need for that. I’ll just leave on my own.” Steve said, quickly kicking against the idea but Beta Richard gave him a weird look and he stepped
back a little.
“I don’t think you need to stress yourself.” Steve said to him again, as he tried to still convince him not to take him home.
“I insist, Steve. Let’s go.” Beta Richard said with a commanding tone and Steve had no choice but to obey.
He bit his lip as they walked to Beta Richard’s car. He took out his phone which had now been handes back to him and tried to call Megan to inform Veronica of his arrival and that he had
Chapter 57
company, but he was unable to reach her. He also tried to send
her a message but she didn’t respond immediately, which meant that she didn’t get the message.
He checked his phone for Veronica’s number and luckily found
- it. He called her with hopes of her picking the call, but was
disappointed at the fact that the phone was switched off.
He then began to think of different ways to ensure that Beta
Richard does not go into his house with him. He thought of
running into the house immediately but that would raise
suspicions. There was nothing reasonable he could do but to
only hope that by some strange reason, Beta Richard wouldn’t
want to come in.
He tried to remain composed as they both engaged in different
conversations on their way to Steve’s house.
Veronica, on the other hand, was feeling bothered somehow.
She had been unable to peacefully sleep in the last couple of
days because she kept having nightmares, hearing strange
voices, calling her a curse and a harbinger of doom.
Also, the fact that guards were always on patrol both during the
day and at night kept her on her toes and this was on of the
many reasons she turned off her phone.
Being alone also didn’t help matter as she kept having various
Chapter 57
scary thoughts of getting caught, being punished and sent out of
the pack. Megan only can’t by a few times because she is busy
doing some important things for her family.
Veronica sat on the bed, staring at an art frame decor, perfectly
hanging on the wall, as if it held the solution to her many
problems.
She was still in that position when the heard the sound of a car
pulling up outside.
“Who could that be?” She thought to herself and immediately
got up to go and hurried off to the living room, as quietly as
possible, to check.
She slightly pulled the curtains to the side, leaving a very small
opening for her to see what was going on outside. She then
quietly peeped through the opening, and saw a car with black
tinted windows, making it impossible for her to see who was in
- it.
“You house sure is really far. How did I not notice all this while?”
Beta Richard commented as he parked the car properly.
“Maybe it’s because you hardly ever visit.” Steve shrugged as he
spoke.
“Yeah, I agree. I’m actually guilty of that, but you know that the
Chapter 57
pack duties can be choking sometimes. It’s now different from
when you still lived in the Alpha’s quarters, where I could see
you every single day.” He explained and Steve nodded.
“I understand and I do not hold it against you.” Steve replied,
taking off his seatbelt.
“But to say the truth, you were really determined to stay far
away from the palace.” Beta Richard said again but this time,
Steve had no words and so he just kept quiet and gave a faint
smile.
Steve stepped out of the car and stretched his tall and muscular
frame, while Beta Richard focused on rearranging and putting
the car in order before he headed to his destination, or so, Steve
thought.
Seeing Steve, Veronica’s eyes widened, her face filled with both shock and happiness. Her lips parted as she was about to scream, but she managed to hold in the squeal of joy threatening to
escape from her lips.
She held her hands to her mouth as happy tears welled up in her eyes but her happiness was short–lived when she suddenly saw Beta Richard stepping out of the car. Her hands fell and her heart began to race as he turned towards the house.
“Oh no. Is he coming here?” Veronica thought to herself as beads
Chapter 57
of sweat began to form on her forehead. She stood transfixed,
not knowing what to do.
Seeing as Beta Richard had alighted from the car, Steve’s heart
began to beat fast too.
“Ar.. Are you coming in?” Steve asked him, stuttering.
“Of course. Were you expecting me to just stand out here?” Beta
Richard asked, with a funny sneer.
“No, I thought you were only going to drop me off and leave since I have to freshen up and all that.” Steve said to him.
“Yes, that was it, but I have just decided to pay you a visit since
you said I never visit. You can freshen up too, I’m not stopping you. It’s not like you’re going to spend the whole day in the bathroom.” He replied and Steve was left confused.
“Today?” Steve asked, without thinking properly.
“Of course, today. What is wrong with today?” Beta Richard
asked him.
“Nothing, I just thought that maybe you would want to come some other day.” Steve answered, still trying to convince him to
leave.
“Nah, I might not be chanced to come here any other day,
Chapter 57
anytime soon.” Beta Richard said.
“But-” Steve tried to protest.
“No ‘buts‘, Steve.” Beta Richard complained, “Let’s just go in. Lead
the way.” Beta Richard said again and Steve had no other choice.
As they got to the front door, he hope that his key would be
missing since Megan had access to it. Seeing as he didn’t see her
rushing out to him, she already knew that Megan wasn’t there.
And at that moment, he hoped that she had taken the key with
her, so that he would have the perfect means of escape.
The moment he saw the key, carefully placed in its position, he
shook his head in disappointment.
He took a quick glance at Beta Richard and gave a weird–looking
smile before he proceeded to push the key into the keyhole.
The moment the door was unlocked, “What is all this drama for?
I’m going in.” Beta Richard said as he opened the door and went
in, to Steve’s shock.
