Chapter 47
“Megan, please talk to me. What is going on?” Veronica asked as calmly as possible even though she was completely scared and
her anxiety was shooting through the roof. Her heart, racing
with every passing second.
She wished Megan had put the call on loudspeaker, so she would
have heard the whole conversation with her dad and there
would have been no need for her to start asking questions from
Megan, who was now looking so devastated with tears welling
up in her eyes.
But at the same time, she understood that it was a conversation
between a father and his child and it should be somewhat
private. So she respected her privacy.
As Megan began to cry, Veronica became so confused, not
knowing what to do or what words to say that wouldn’t
complicate the present situation or worsen it.
“Megan, can you please talk to me? What did your dad say? Is
Steve fine?” Veronica kept asking, her voice filled with concern
but Megan just kept crying, her cries getting louder.
Crouching in front of Megan and holding her hands, Veronica

spoke again, “Please you have to talk to me so that we can know
what to do next. Please, the suspense is killing me. Please,
Megan. Just calm down, please.” She begged her.
After much persuasion, Megan finally calmed down a bit and
wiped her tears.
Seeing as Megan slowly composed herself, wiping her tears with
the back of her hand, Veronica seized the opportunity to ask her
again, “What did your dad say? Did he get any information
about Steve?” She asked calmly, her eyes intently locked in
Megan’s eyes, like it held the answers to her question.
Megan sniffled, her voice barely above a whisper. “Yes, he did.”
“Okay?” Veronica squinted, her uncertainty deepening, “What
did he say?” Veronica pressed, her brow furrowed, not sure of
what Megan was going to say about the issue at hand.
Tears began to pour out of her eyes once again, and Veronica
tightened her grip gently on her hands, “Breathe Megan, please
take a deep breath.” Veronica urged her, gently and she did as
Veronica told her and was able to calm down once again.
“My dad said the Alpha ordered for Steve to be thrown into the
dungeon.” Her words tumbled out
“He said the Alpha ordered Steve to be thrown into the

dungeon.” Megan’s words tumbled out in a rush as she tried to fight the tears which were threatening to spill from her eyes
once again.
Veronica’s eyes widened in shock as she sprung to her feet. “What?! Just because he had a fight?” Her voice echoed through
the room as her gaze remained on Megan, searching for
answers.
“Why would he do such a thing just because of a mere fracas between two young men?” She asked further, unable to believe
that Steve was punished that severely just because he had a
fight and punched someone in the face.
She then began to pace across the room, her footsteps echoing
with every step she took.
“I know he is the Alpha and Yes, I know that what Steve did was wrong. He shouldn’t have punched Trey but he was provoked and couldn’t keep his emotions in check at that moment. I think
he is being unfairly punished. This is not fair at all.”
“How can the Alpha be so ruthless? I thought the one at my
previous pack was ruthless but I’m beginning to fear for my life
here.” She muttered. “Steve punched someone in the face, that’s
all. It was not like he committed such a heinous and
unforgivable crime.” She complained further.
Chapter 47
“You don’t understand how things are done here, Veronica. You
don’t know the Alpha that is why you’re talking this way.”
Megan said to her, wiping the lingering tears from her eyes.
“Yes, I don’t know him and I don’t know how things are done
here, but sincerely speaking, I feel like this is unjust. He
shouldn’t have been thrown into the dungeon just like that.”
Veronica replied.
“I actually agree with you but I guess there are some things that
we don’t have a say over.” Megan said but Veronica didn’t stop
pacing.
“Why the dungeon, of all places though? Isn’t that where
hardened criminals and offenders are kept?” Veronica asked
her.
“Yes, you’re right.” Megan said.
“So why should he be treated like a criminal when it was all a
minor issue between two people?” Veronica asked, as she found
it hard to believe that Alpha Marcus could do such a thing.
She paused and stopped pacing for a moment and turned to look
at Megan, “Megan, is that how your Alpha does here? He just
dishes out any punishment even when your offence is not a
serious one?” She asked.
Chapter 47
“Not exactly.” Megan replied.
“Then why is Steve’s case different?” Veronica asked, standing
akimbo.
“You see, the Alpha can be very strict but you see, whenever it
comes to issues pertaining to Steve, he is always extra hard on
him. Also, dad said he challenged his authority or something. I
don’t know the full details.” Megan revealed, not going into too
much detail.
“But why?” Veronica asked further, with a confused look on her
face. “I don’t seem to understand.”
A
Megan thought for a second about the perfect answer to give to
Veronica that wouldn’t reveal too much information about the
relationship between Steve and the Alpha.
“I have no idea. It has just been that way for years.” She lied to
Veronica, who then continued to pace, trying to understand but
failing.
She then stopped pacing and took her seat beside Megan, “So,
what do we do? What is going to happen now? Is your dad going
to plead with the Alpha on Steve’s behalf?” Veronica asked her
and waited expectantly for a positive response from Megan but
she sighed instead.
Chapter 47
“What is it? He can’t?” Veronica asked, puzzled.
“I think he will eventually, but for now I think there are other
pressing pack issues.” Megan replied, leaning back into the chair.
“Oh, is everything okay though?” Veronica asked, with concern.
“I really don’t know. He said the southern pack market caught
on fire a few hours ago.” Megan answered and Veronica’s eyes widened in shock. “In fact, he said the fire was put out not long
ago.” She added.
Megan’s voice cracked as she continued, “Of all the markets in
this pack, that’s the biggest market in the pack and because of
the fire, a lot of the people’s properties and means of livelihood
have been destroyed.”
As Megan spoke further, Veronica’s eyes grew wider, “Oh no,
that’s such a devastating and disheartening news.” Her hands
flew to her mouth, covering it.
“All those families relying on the market for survival are now
left with nothing…” Her voice trailed off as her heart went out to
those affected by the fire.
“Exactly, they are now left empty.” Megan said in support. “Some now have injured family members in the hospital.” She added, staring at nothing in particular.
Chapter 47
“Now they would want answers, they would want a solution
and the only person who they feel will be able to provide it is the
Alpha.” She said as she thought deeply about it.
After thinking so much about the whole issue on ground,
Megan spoke again, “I really don’t know what is going on lately.
It all seems like the pack is under some sort of curse or
something. I don’t even know what to think anymore.” She said,
worriedly.
And at that moment, Veronica began to hear strange voices
speaking loudly in her head. Veronica’s gaze drifted from
Megan, her mind racing and it felt like she was being
transported to another place.
Suddenly, a harmony of strange voices exploded in her mind.
“Can you see that you’re the cause of all the misfortunes?” The
voice boomed, as it echoed through her thoughts.
Veronica’s eyes snapped shut, she then pressed her hands on her
temples as if to block out the intrusive thoughts that flooded her
mind because of the strange voices.
“You truly attract problems wherever you are,” the voice
continued, its tone so spiteful. “You’ve only stayed here for a few
days, and there’s a problem erupting from every part of the
pack. You have brought your curse upon them too.”
Chapter 47
Megan, who noticed Veronica’s sudden silence, turned to look at
her but saw that her eyes were completely shut. With a
concerned expression asked, “Veronica, what’s wrong? Are you
okay?”
In just a matter of minutes, Veronica’s forehead immediately
had beads of sweat and her breath became intense, “I…I hear
voices,” she stammered.
The voice in her head persisted. “You have not only brought
problems to the one who brought you into this pack. You have
also brought misfortunes to the pack at large. Everyone is
paying dearly because of you.”
“No…no, it’s not my fault.” She muttered under her breath, while
Megan stared at her in confusion.
“No!!!” She suddenly screamed out, trying to shut out the voice as
her eyes snapped open, with fear burning within.
Getting scared, Megan grasped Veronica’s arm. “What’s
happening to you? You’re scaring me, Veronica.” She said, with
fear laced all over her voice.
Veronica’s gaze locked onto Megan’s. “I don’t know.” She
struggled to answer Megan as she closed eyes again and covered
her ears with her hands.
Chapter 47
The voice in her head laughed maniacally. “Deny it all you want,
but the truth remains. You don’t belong here. You are the
harbinger of doom!” Everything then became silent
immediately.
