Chapter 4

Two slaps and a few words silenced the room that had been full of laughter.

The more I thought about it, the more annoyed I got. I picked up a glass of wine and splashed it right in Wayne’s face.

Nikita, who had been clinging close to him, let out a sharp scream.

“Oh no! Diana, are you crazy?

“How could you do that to Wayne?”

She grabbed a few tissues and started wiping his face, clearly heartbroken.

But Wayne didn’t have time to play gentle with her. He shoved her aside.

He picked up the divorce papers from the table, stared at them for a few seconds, then stood up, eyes locked on me in disbelief. His voice cracked from shock.

“Diana, are you insane?”

Then he let out a laugh, like he found it all ridiculous.

“Diana, what are you gonna use to divorce me? You think you can survive without me?

“Don’t forget, I’ve been supporting you. Since the day we got married, you’ve been living off me for four years. A full-time housewife who only knows how to hold out her hand for money. What right do you have to divorce me?”

He got more fired up as he spoke, pride all over his face. Then he ended it with confidence.

“You’re not leaving me, Diana. You don’t have the guts.”

As soon as he finished, it was like someone flipped a switch.

The whole room came alive.

His buddies all jumped in, one after another.

“Diana, you got it wrong. Wayne was just talking big!”

“He only left you in Switzerland because he believed in you. Look, you’re back now, aren’t you?”

“We all know how much Wayne dotes on you. Come on, don’t be mad. Hahaha.”

I glanced at each of them, half-smiling.

“Wow, you guys flip so fast it’s pathetic. Wayne snaps his fingers, and you all scramble like trained pets. Hilarious. Weren’t you just saying you couldn’t wait to see me crash and burn?”

They all shut up.

Then I looked back at Wayne.

“You always tear me down in front of others, making me sound like I’m worth nothing.

“But maybe you forgot-we went to the same university. I graduated with honors. I bought my own house after work- ing just two years. Compared to you, someone with a family to prop him up but still stuck in the same place, I might just be more capable.”

Wayne threw the divorce papers at me.

I stepped back, and Leroy raised his arm to shield me.

The white sheets bounced off and landed by his elbow.

“What a waste,” I thought. “Guess I’ll have to print another copy.”

Wayne glared. “Leroy, what the hell is your problem? Whose side are you on?”

Leroy pulled his hand off my shoulder, stepped to the side casually, and said with a smirk, “I’m on the side of justice, sorry. I can’t stand cheating men or homewrecking women.

“Seriously, Wayne, if you wanted to fool around, at least be upfront about it. Why drag Ms. Thornton along? It does- n’t make you much of a man.”

Wayne’s face turned red with rage. Normally, he’d be shouting by now. But this time, not a single curse came out, no matter how hard he tried.

I glanced at Leroy, curious.

His background had to be something-Wayne wouldn’t hold back like that unless he had a reason.

Still, this was my mess. There’s no point letting someone else fight it for me.

I stepped forward. “Wayne, I came today to tell you I’m getting a divorce. I don’t care what you say-this marriage is over. If you won’t sign peacefully, I’ll sue. I don’t mind dragging it out for years. But hey, that might mess things up for your sweet little childhood crush.”

Tears welled up in Nikita’s eyes as she looked at Wayne, pitiful and hurt. But he didn’t even glance at her.

His icy expression shifted. He looked like he finally understood something.

“So that’s it. You’re still hung up on Nikita.

“Diana, I’ve told you more than once-there’s nothing between me and Nikita. You’ve got it all wrong. We’re clean.

“You don’t have family around you, so you don’t get it. This is what family feels like.

“I’ll let today slide. But don’t push it. If this happens again, I will divorce you.”

Then he frowned slightly and held out his hand.

I looked at him like he was an idiot.
