Maddalena slowly looked up. Her eyes, dull and distant, looked like they were drowning in waves, completely blank, like there was nothing left inside.

The situation spiraled quickly, catching the attention of the hospital director and upper management. One by one, they showed up, but Silvano did not even flinch. He had only one demand.

“Suspend her immediately. A doctor like her has no right treating patients!”

Maddalena stood quietly in the back, feeling like each of his words was a blade, slicing her heart apart.

The leaders were quick to play peacemakers. “Okay, okay, we’ll do whatever you say,” one of them assured.

The director tried to speak up, “But Dr. Albergo already…”

“That’s enough!” Silvano cut him off, cold and firm. “I don’t want any excuses. Just suspend her.”

And with that, he helped Vittoria up and left without looking back.

The hallway was filled with stunned doctors and nurses exchanging awkward glances. The director, clearly fuming, brought Maddalena back to his office.

He slammed the desk and barked, “This is ridiculous! He’s siding with outsiders to go after his own wife!

“What kind of people are these?”

While he was red-faced and furious, Maddalena had already calmed down. She even smiled faintly.

“He’s not my husband.”

“What?” The director was caught off guard.

For years, Silvano had been the one picking her up and dropping her off. When he went missing for six months, the hospital staff all comforted her, assuming they were a couple.

When she mentioned getting married, they just thought the longtime lovers had finally tied the knot.

And now, seeing Silvano so protective of another woman, it was clear what had really been going on.

The director sighed. “Then it’s for the best that you move on.”

Maddalena did not say anything and just gave a small smile.

After everything that happened, she made up her mind to resign earlier than planned. However, when she got home to pack, she ran straight into Silvano coming back from outside.

He frowned when he saw the suitcase. “What are you doing?”

Maddalena zipped it shut, stood up, and said calmly, “I’m moving out today. As for our engagement, you can an- nounce the cancellation when it’s convenient.”

“Again with this tactic?”

Silvano narrowed his eyes, and annoyance quickly drowned out the brief flicker of panic in his heart.

“You’ve got nothing new, huh?” Silvano’s voice was cold. “Still playing hard to get? It’s getting old. You’re wasting your time.”

She looked at him-so sure of himself, so smug-and suddenly felt exhausted.

She let out a quiet sigh and said plainly, “I’m not mad at you, and I’m not trying to play games, Silvano. I just don’t love you anymore.”

That last sentence hit him hard.

Maybe it sounded too casual and final, so he did not react at first. However, a moment later, he froze, turned to her slowly, and stared like he did not believe what he had heard.

“What did you just say?” Then, he scoffed like it was a joke.

“You don’t love me? Then why have you been going after Tori every day? Why did you go after Celene? Why do you trail behind me like some stray mutt?”

His voice was sharp, filled with cruel sarcasm. Maddalena’s breath caught in her throat.

So in his eyes, she had always just been a desperate tag-along. That last bit of longing she had held onto crumbled completely. Oddly enough, she felt lighter.

“Just think of me as blind before,” she said calmly.

“Maddalena!” he snapped.

Silvano’s expression darkened, his tone low and dangerous. “If you’re still not sorry, then stay home and think about what you’ve done.”

Without waiting, he turned and walked away.

A bad feeling hit Maddalena all at once.

She rushed after him, but he slammed the door behind him before she could get out.

“Keep an eye on her,” she heard him tell someone outside. “She doesn’t leave unless I say so. She needs time to re- flect.”

“Silvano! Silvano, let me out!” she shouted, pounding the door.

“You’re imprisoning me!

“This is illegal! Open the door!”

But no one answered.

Just as panic started to rise in her chest, her phone rang, and it was a call from the hospital.

“Ms. Albergo, your grandfather just had a sudden emergency. He was brought into the ER. Can you come over right away?”
