Chapter 15
Jack locked eyes with Emily, his gaze hard as granite.
He had once believed she was just a little willful–a medic who’d saved his life during an avalanche, someone deserving of some leniency. He never thought his kindness would be twisted, or that she’d
use it to hurt someone else.
Someone like Olivia.
His voice was low, but the cold steel in it cut deep.
“Emily, that day–you smashed the pill bottle yourself. Why did you frame Olivia?”
Emily’s face stiffened, but before she could sputter an excuse, Jack pressed on, his voice like a
blade.
“Why did you push her into the river? Why did you burn her mother’s photograph? Why the hell would you do that to her?“:
With every word, he stepped closer, his presence looming over her. Emily hadn’t expected him to know everything. His icy stare made her tremble, but she rallied, her eyes welling up with tears.
“I didn’t mean to,” she whispered, blinking hard. Tears welled in her eyes. “I just… I love you, Jack. I’ve loved you ever since the avalanche. I spent three days and nights combing through snow to find you–I nearly died trying. And then she showed up–Olivia. She kept pulling you away from me. I was scared. Scared you’d forget all about me.”
“You said you’d think about being with me…didn’t you, Jack?”
Her voice cracked. Her tears spilled freely now, each one more performative than the last.
But Jack didn’t flinch. He’d seen the surveillance footage. He knew the truth.
Everything about this–the trembling lip, the misty eyes–it all felt staged. Just like how she’d hurt Olivia, over and over, with her crocodile tears and lies.
His voice was ice–cold, not a flicker of warmth.“When you were poisoned, I saved your life. We’re square, Emily. I don’t owe you a damn thing. But I’ll never forgive you for what you did to Olivia. I
don’t love you–never did. Stop wasting your breath.”
He took another step back, his tone tightening.

“I’m gonna find Olivia, I owe her an apology. I plan to give it to her–in person. Because she’s the one I love. Not you.”
With that, he turned to leave, ignoring the woman still sprawled on the hospital bed.
But Emily scrambled off the bed and grabbed his sleeve.
“No, Jack! You can’t just leave–not after everything we’ve been through!”
Jack looked down–and froze. She was standing, moving just fine. Her injury had been a lie too?
The fury that surged through him was ice–cold.
He yanked his arm back like her touch burned. His eyes were filled with nothing but loathing.
“You disgust me. You pretended to be hurt just to keep me here? You played the victim so I’d pity you? If you can stand, you can walk. And if you can walk, then we’re done. I never want to see you
again.”
Emily collapsed to the floor, not from pain, but from sheer devastation.
It wasn’t the fall that broke her. It was his words.
But then something twisted in her expression.
Rage. For Olivia.
She’d spent years targeting her, and yet Olivia was still stealing Jack away?
Desperate, she threw herself at him from behind, wrapping her arms around his waist. “Jack, please! I’m sorry! I’ll be better–I’ll make peace with Olivia, I swear! I’ll do anything–just don’t
hate me!”
Her sobs echoed, pleading for the old Jack–the one who’d doted on her to forgive her.
But the moment she said Olivia’s name–Jack snapped. He couldn’t take it anymore. With a sharp shove, he broke free from her grip, whirling to face her.
