Chapter 8
I found myself an excellent vantage point and sat down, giving the stage to Griffin for
now. And to his credit, he didn’t disappoint.
In front of the entire company, Griffin completely lost his composure. He pointed at Miles and berated him, “As the founder of Grant Enterprise, I order you to apologize to Ms. Jackman right now!
“If you insist on being stubborn and making things worse, then as far as I’m concerned, I no longer have a son.”
Then, he straightened up and walked over to stand in front of me. The words he had spoken were like the final straw. It broke the silence that had gripped the crowd.
Torn between his pride as the CEO of Grant Enterprise and his father’s authority, Miles stayed silent.
Just as an abrupt hush filled the air, I slowly stood up.
“There’s no need for an apology. My relationship with your family has pretty much reached its end,” I stated.
Griffin instantly broke out in cold sweat.
“How about you name your pricé, Ms. Jackman,” he offered.
I smiled in amusement. “What do you mean by that, Mr. Griffin? Are you trying to buy your way out of this? To be honest, I’ve dealt with plenty of powerful people in recent years. However, I’ve rarely seen a scion as entitled and lawless as your son.
“If I had been but some ordinary person, Mr. Miles wouldn’t have even made an effort to appear here in person, would he? I’m betting a single phone call would’ve been enough to sweep it all under the rug.”
Griffin was trembling. He didn’t dare meet my eyes. “We’re entirely at fault on this matter, Ms. Jackman. I’m willing to make amends for this. Just name whatever you want–I won’t bargain. You have my word!”
Miles had never seen his father so humble. To salvage his family’s dignity, he cut in. “Dad, we’re still a well–known and respected family in Seacrest. How can you just lower yourself like this to this woman?”
I looked up to meet Miles‘ gaze. My tone was tinged with amusement when I said to him, “So, Mr. Grant. Even now, you still think your family calls the shots in Seacrest, huh?”
While I hadn’t been out in the world much in recent years, I had still met quite a few power players. However, be it wealth or influence, the Grant family was no match. They wouldn’t even make the list.
“Listen. I’m not as gullible as my father. If you’ve got anything up your sleeve, go ahead and show me!” Miles shot back.
I glanced down at my watch before letting out a mocking laugh. “Having confidence is a good thing, Mr. Miles. However, in your case, you’re blinded by your arrogance. Your family name that you keep boasting about? Hanestly, it’s nothing to write home about.”
The moment I said this, Griffin’s expression immediately changed. He was about to speak, but I swiftly raised a hand to stop him. “You heard everything your son just said, didn’t you, Mr. Griffin? If I don’t respond in kind today, people might really think they can bully an outsider like me,” I stated.
As soon as my words left my mouth, Miles‘ phone rang.
He stole a glance at me. Then, after hesitating for a few seconds, he answered it. “What? Say that again!”
Miles‘ eyes went wide as he stared at me in disbelief.
“What? Financial irregularities? The company’s been shut down indefinitely? And the investigative team is from Castria?” he continued.
After triple–checking with the legal department, Miles was completely dazed.
“Don’t tell me… All of this was your doing?” he uttered disbelievingly.
The look on his face said it all. Even after hearing the news of his company’s downfall, Miles still refused to believe I could be behind it.
