Caleb asked with a gentle smile, “Elara, you’re not surprised that we’re characters in a book. When did you find out?”
I clasped my hands behind my back: “What characters in a book? Jaxon’s just talking nonsense.”
“Elara, when you lie, you unconsciously put your hands behind your back.”
I wished I could chop off my hands right then and there.
“System, save me! Save me!”
“The system cannot interfere with the host and the plot, apart from urging mission completion.”
“Nonsense! Then how did I change targets earlier? Isn’t that interference?”
“Host, that was because it was detected that your aversion towards the male lead was too high, which would impact the happy nding.”
“So, based on data matching, a suitable new target was chosen for the host.”
“And that’s *not* interference?”
”
”
“Host, this is a female–oriented sweet romance novel. The male lead is chosen by the female lead.”
“…You didn’t tell me that! How was I supposed to know?”
“So what do I do now?”
“Host, you’re on your own.”
“So disloyal!”
Seeing Caleb still staring at me, clearly expecting an answer.
I sheepishly brought my hands to the front and, giving up, said, “Three years ago.”

“Because Jaxon wanted to resist the plot, and whatever the plot was, he’d do the opposite. And I needed to follow the plot.”
Caleb
was
quick to grasp the key point: “What’s the benefit?”
“Saving the world. This is a story world. If the plot goes haywire, the world collapses. But this world doesn’t force people to follow the plot; only the objective settings won’t change.”
“For example,
as the female lead of this sweet romance novel, I need to have a happy and successful family, love, and career.”
“Another example: my father, at 47, will be diagnosed with stomach cancer due to years of irregular eating habits.”
“I need that main character halo.”
Caleb then asked, “So, I’m the new male lead?”
This man was annoyingly good at getting to the point.
My heart nearly stopped: “Yes.”
Caleb asked, a little cautiously, “It really won’t force us to follow the plot, will it?”
I affirmed, “Right. Actually, the plot was already unrecognizable due to Jaxon’s resistance. It went off track a long time ago.”
“Anyway, as long as I get a happy ending, that’s all that matters.”
I worriedly asked, “Caleb, you wouldn’t pull a Jaxon and try to resist the plot too, would you?”
I was so close to achieving my happy ending, I didn’t want to fail now.
Besides, I truly had fallen in love with Caleb, and I didn’t want anything, especially some plot, to affect us.
Caleb ruffled my hair, laughing softly and shaking his head: “I wouldn’t ruin my own life to resist some so–called plot. Look at the cautionary tale right in front of us.”
I breathed a sigh of relief and glared angrily at the instigator of this whole mess.
“Let him stay here. Let’s go back.”
