Chapter 26
Another year of drizzling spring rain.
In late spring, the drizzle wrapped around the black marble tombstone, turning the three gilded seal characters “Callie” into damp amber.
Marcus knelt on the wet cobblestones, his trousers stained with moss, creating dark green patterns.
The cold of early spring seeped into the marrow, moss weaving emerald nets in the crevices of rocks, water droplets rolling down the folds of the suit, gathering into small puddles at the cuffs of the pants.
When Marcus’s fingertips brushed over the three letters of “Callie“, raindrops fell onto his neck, flowing down the silver chain and forming a river along the dangling silver ring; the inscription “A&M forever” on the inside of the ring pressed against his pulsating artery.
Callie, I came to bid you farewell, Marcus said softly in front of the tombstone.
The rain suddenly slanted, Marcus felt as if a butterfly had landed on his shoulder, but when he turned around, he only saw the tender leaves of the lovesick tree falling.
Brother owes you an apology, and also owes Ally an apology.
Brother is going to leave here to manage the Daston Group’s industries abroad, so, Callie, brother won’t be able to come see you for a while.
Marcus took off the silver ring from the silver chain and rubbed his finger over the inside of the ring, where “A&M forever” was engraved.
