Chapter 5

Maxwell flipped through the pages of the old case file. His face grew darker with each turn.

When I woke up again, I was extremely weak.

“Darling, you’re finally awake!”

I turned my head to see Maxwell by the bedside, eyes lit up with joy.

He reached out eagerly to hug me, but pulled back at the last moment. Instead, he extended his hand cautiously to hold mine.

I immediately pulled away. “Are you unhappy I didn’t die? Trying to get revenge for Karina again?”

My voice was cold.

Maxwell’s face stiffened, his eyes filled with deep apology.

“Darling, don’t be like this. I know you’re angry. Yell at me if you want. Are you hungry or thirsty? Are you hurting anywhere?”

He got up to pour me some water.

Honestly, just looking at him made me sick. I frowned in disgust. “Cut the act, Maxwell. Let’s get a divorce.”

His hand trembled. The scalding water splashed over the back of his hand.

He rushed over to me, his eyes red. “No, Darling. We’re not getting a divorce! I know you can’t have children anymore.

“But don’t worry, I would never abandon you because of that. I’m a doctor. Trust me, I can definitely cure you!”

“Right. You’re a doctor. So you should know my injuries didn’t have to be this bad.”

I turned to look at him. Maxwell’s face instantly went pale.

He was desperately trying to find a way to make amends when Karina suddenly burst in.

With her usual entitled tone, she complained, “Max? Why are you still here? Didn’t you say you were going to buy me jewelry today to make it up to me? Let’s go.”

When he ignored her, she clutched her fully healed arm and pouted.

“Max, my arm still hurts! You absolutely have to buy me a huge diamond ring today, or else I won’t forgive you!”

Maxwell gritted his teeth. “Karina, you’ve got some nerve coming here. The police told me everything. That man didn’t come for Natalie. He was after you. It was your surgical mistake that killed his wife.

“He meant to stab you! Karina, he was a family member of your patient. You must have met him before. Why did you lie to me and cause this misunderstanding with Nat?”

Karina froze for a moment, blinking innocently.

“How was I supposed to know? Besides, I got seriously injured too! I came to you, but instead of caring, you just yelled at me. Watch out, or I won’t talk to you anymore!”

She walked over to my bedside and smiled as she looked at my flat stomach.

“Natalie, so you really were hurt. Then why didn’t you tell me? Now I’m being misunderstood. That’s your fault, you know.”

Maxwell’s face turned cold. The next second, he slapped her hard across the face.

“Get out, you vile woman! Your presence is only slowing down my wife’s recovery!”

Karina stared at him in disbelief. “Maxwell, did you hit me for her? Don’t expect me to talk to you ever again!”

She stomped her foot and ran out, clutching her face in grievance.

Maxwell turned to me again, his tone shifting to placation. Just as he opened his mouth to speak, I cut him off.

“It’s true that Karina lied. But don’t you forget that that knife wouldn’t have gone into my stomach without your help.”

Maxwell, who’d always acted high and mighty in front of me, suddenly looked completely lost.

“Darling, don’t be like this. You’re scaring me. I was just misled by that bitch Karina. I didn’t mean to hurt you. Let me make it up to you, okay?”

I just found his words laughable.

He wanted to make it up to Karina before. Now he wanted to make it up to me.

However, I wasn’t Karina, and I didn’t need it.
