Chapter 5
Before the banquet started, I got two messages back–to–back.
“Today, I’m announcing my engagement to Jessica. Be good, and I’ll let you have a kid and stay in the Basom family. At least you’ll be taken care of when you’re old.”
“Amy, have you understood your mistake? If you promise to behave from now on, I’ll talk to Grandpa myself and ask for his okay to marry you.”
I blocked both messages immediately.
Because of my leg injury, I had to enter the hall in a wheelchair.
Eric’s eyes briefly showed concern, and he instinctively leaned in my direction, but Jessica held him back firmly. Meanwhile, Adam was in the corner, twirling his wine glass, seemingly unsurprised by the situation.
All of a sudden, everyone turned their attention to me, and the guests started murmuring among themselves.
“I’ve heard that the Basom family purchased this bride for 15 million dollars. She appears even more disheveled than the family’s maids!”
“Neither of the Basom brothers wants to marry her. She’s been stuck playing the maid already!”
I walked past them calmly until I noticed the man next to Henry. Oliver softly helped me to my feet and guided me to stand beside Henry.
Just then, Henry walked up to the stage and declared to everyone, “The Basom family will be passed on to my third grandson, Oliver. His marriage to Amy is scheduled to take place in ten days.”

The crowd below the stage erupted into chaos.
“Isn’t Oliver unable to have children? Isn’t Sir Basom worried that the Basom family won’t have an heir?”

“Now the two young men of the Basom family will struggle. They’ve been surpassed by an illegitimate son!”
Adam clenched his wine glass so tightly that it shattered, his face pale. Eric’s brows knitted together as disbelief filled his eyes.
Ignoring Jessica, who stood next to them, the two swiftly approached me.
Adam’s eyes locked on Oliver’s hand in mine. “Amy, why?”
Watching him continue to pretend, my disgust for him only grew. I lifted our clasped hands and flashed a victorious grin.
“Isn’t it clear? Oliver and I are getting married, and the wedding is in ten days.”
Eric glanced at Oliver with disdain, his voice laced with scorn.
“Him? An illegitimate child isn’t qualified to lead the Basom family. He doesn’t even deserve to hold my shoes. Even if you’re trying to spite Jessica and me, you can’t marry a man who can’t have children! Go tell Grandpa to call off this wedding with the bastard!”
Seeing Eric’s arrogant attitude, I couldn’t help but wonder how I ever fell for such a coward who always shirks responsibility.
I sneered. “Instead of butting into my business, why don’t you check on your fiancée behind you?”
Sure enough, Jessica’s face turned really pale. She clutched her chest and looked at Eric with a hurt expression. “Eric, my chest hurts…”

A flicker of conflict crossed Eric’s eyes. He glanced at me, then led Jessica away. Only Adam was left, staring at me with a dark look.
I was about to pull Oliver away when my other hand was grabbed.
“Let go of my wife’s hand!”
Adam just stared straight at me, his eyes filled with hurt.
“Amy…”
I shook my head. Adam was still acting even now.
Adam squeezed harder, sending a sharp pain through my wrist.
“Ow…”
Oliver quickly grabbed his collar and pushed him away, giving him fierce glare.
“Please don’t disturb my future wife again!”
With that, he picked me up and headed toward the lounge.
