Chapter 8 Forgive Me
By the time Lionel called, I had already settled into
Srester.
Over the past few days, I’d felt an immense sense of relief. Here, I’d finally escaped the people and things I despised. No one here discussed my past, and I didn’t have to deal with the gossip anymore.
What was more, I managed to secure a spot auditing at the Srester State Ballet Academy.
Now, I could focus on my recovery while diving back into the dance I loved. Without the old burdens weighing me down, I could finally dedicate myself fully to advancing my skills in the dance world.
As I stared at the
number repeatedly flashing on my phone, my expression hardened. My hand shook slightly as I accidentally pressed the answer button.
“Alice, are you okay?” His voice on the other end was hoarse, as though he had been ill.
“I can explain everything. You need to believe me. You’re the only woman I’ll ever love. With Alissa, I’ve only ever felt guilty.
“If you’re willing to come back and say at the press conference that it was all a misunderstanding, I’ll make sure she’s gone.”
“We could go back to being a happy family, just like before. Don’t you want that?”
I didn’t say anything, but a bitter smile tugged at the corner of my lips.

My silence, however, seemed to give him hope.
“I know you love me, and you can’t bear to be without me. Saying you wanted a divorce was just a moment of anger, wasn’t it? You wouldn’t really want to see David Group’s stock fall, would you?”
“Come on, Dion, tell your mom you love her.”
After a few moments of silence, Dion’s soft voice came through.
“Mom, Dion misses you so much. It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have put thumbtacks in your shoes. I know I was wrong.”
“Dion, I’m not your mom. You know that, right? Don’t call me that again. Now, give the phone back to your dad.” My voice was cold, flat, and emotionless.
“Lionel, do you really think that after what you and your son have done, I’d ever come back?” I asked.
“If it wasn’t for Clare’s kindness to me, I might never have married you in the first place. This was all just a karmic disaster.”
“I never want to see you two again in this lifetime. As for the fall of David Group, it’s none of my concern. Even if I sell it off for a fraction of its worth, I’ll be just fine.‘
“You’d better apologize to the public at the press conference in ten days, and you’d better tell them the truth.”

There was a long pause on the other end, and then his voice cracked. “Alice, after all these years together, is there really no way to fix this? What can I do for you to forgive me?”
I let out a harsh laugh. “After everything you’ve done, even if you died a hundred times in front of me, I’d never forgive you.”
