Chapter 9
Ethan was right.
When I got home, David was standing outside my door. The ground was covered with cigarette butts, showing how anxious he was.
His face looked worn out, with dark circles around his eyes, and his hair was all messy from running his hands through it–the usual stern and calm look of his CEO demeanor was gone.
The moment our eyes met on the stairs, his gaze was full of guilt.
David walked up to me and hugged me tightly, his voice shaking with relief. “Celine, I’ve finally waited for you.
“I saw the video online. So Kelly was driving that day… I’ve been kept in the dark all along, and even hurt you.”
His voice trembled as if he was reliving the accident, choking up as if he was seeing my pain firsthand. “Does it still hurt?”
How could it not? The crushed car frame, the jolt of abdominal pain, the terror of facing death. They all could have destroyed me.
But the sharpest ache came from David’s casual words. “Kelly said she wasn’t driving. It was all because Celine was too willful.”
Sophie got the dashcam video from eight years ago without much trouble.
Uncovering the truth wasn’t the hard part. David just wouldn’t believe me.
I chuckled and shot back, “What do you think? David, guess if it hurt.”

David couldn’t say anything anymore. His eyes reddened as he tried to hold me tight again. “Celine, I was wrong. I was really wrong…”

He was like a trapped animal in pain, crying about finding out the truth too late and apologizing to me over and over. “Celine, I’ve already had people lock Kelly up. I’ll make her pay for what she did!”
He added, sounding really scared, “I misunderstood you back then. If I’d trusted you more, we wouldn’t be here. I’m so glad you woke up and you’re safe. From now on, our family of three can live happily…”
‘David, have you forgotten about that divorce agreement?” I cut him off, my cold eyes piercing him deeply.
He trembled as he let go of my hand, his voice softening for the first time, almost pleading. “Celine, do we really have to do this?
“Please, give me one more chance.”
I stayed calm, just saying flatly, “Did you ever give me a chance?”
Before he could think about what I meant, I said, “David, I want to see the doctor who was in charge back then.”
I clearly saw a flash of panic cross David’s face, quickly replaced by guilt.
“Okay.” He nodded. “I should also thank him for helping you wake up.”
Listening to his unbearably fake words, I dropped my gaze to hide the mockery in my eyes.
Once I got what I wanted, I turned and walked into the house without hesitation. David was left standing outside, lost and confused.
The appointed day arrived swiftly.
David came to my house first to pick me up. As we traveled, he talked

endlessly about the punishments he had given to Kelly.
Since Kelly had falsely claimed she lost her fertility, David decided to turn her lie into reality by personally giving her sterilization pills.

Because she had intentionally caused the car accident that injured me, he broke her legs, so she would experience the pain I endured.
For framing me and tricking Owen into harming me, he ensured that Owen took his revenge on her himself.
While David bragged about his achievements, I remained composed and gazed quietly out the car window.
Seeing my indifference, David cautiously looked over at me and tentatively said, “Celine, tomorrow is Owen’s birthday. He really wants you to be there. It’s his first birthday since you woke up. It means a lot to him. Will you come back with me?”
I shut my eyes, trying to relax, and replied in a monotone, “No.”
