Chapter 6
David’s face got really dark with anger.
“Celine, is this why you had to leave?
“So you already found someone else. No wonder you were in such a hurry!”
Looking at his ugly expression, I felt confused.
“Mr. Kilbreth, you’re overstepping.
“What I do and who I’m with is none of your business.”
David clenched his fists, his voice strained through clenched teeth. “You! Celine, you really take the cake!”

Owen also pointed at me, his tone hostile. “You’re such a fickle woman. My dad says that’s wrong.”
I glanced indifferently at both of them and turned to Ethan. “Mr. Nottunie, have you finished your meal?”
When he nodded, I added, “Then please draft a divorce agreement for me first.”
David grew agitated. “Celine, are you crazy? You really want a divorce?”
Meeting his flustered gaze, I nodded. “Yes.

“Owen is waiting to be Kelly’s son, isn’t he? Do you want Kelly to stay with you indefinitely without status?
“Signing the divorce papers is better for both of us.”

I figured David would agree right away. But he slapped the phone out of my hand, his eyes all red. “I won’t sign.
“Celine, are you even willing to give up on Owen?” His voice actually had a hint of fear.
I laughed softly and asked calmly, “David, have you lost the ability to understand human language?
“The first day I woke up, I said…
“As you wish.”
Just like they wanted, I was giving up the title of Mrs. Kilbreth, stepping aside for Kelly.
David froze, his hand gripping Owen’s tighter without meaning to, his face getting really dark.
Owen yelped in pain, then somehow looked at me, whining, “It hurts.”
I said indifferently, “Go find your mother to comfort you.”
Owen was taken aback. “Aren’t you my mother?”
“Not anymore.” I shook my head. “Haven’t been for a long time.
“You said it yourself–the grace of raising outweighs the grace of giving birth. Kelly, who raised you for eight years, is your mother.”
I repeated it one last time, then turned and left with Ethan.
That evening, my phone started ringing. I glanced at the caller ID, kept eating my food, and let it go to voicemail.
David kept calling over and over. When I didn’t pick up, he started sending messages.

Chapter 6
“Celine, why aren’t you answering?
“Why are so many things missing from the storage room? Where’s our wedding photo?
“Celine, are you okay? If you don’t answer, I’m calling the police.”

When he threatened to call the police, I finally picked up, nice and slow.
David’s worried voice came through. “Celine, what took you so long to answer?”
I cut him off with a cold voice. “I threw them away.
“David, do you think this is funny?” I said straight out. “For eight years, you kept our wedding photo sealed in that dark storage room without a second thought. Now that I’m awake, you start looking for it. What are you pretending for?”
My words hit him hard, and he paused. It took him a while to pull himself together before he said sadly, “I… I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Just the thought of life without you makes me anxious.
“I haven’t seen you in so long, yet every expression of yours is etched in my mind. I think… I can’t live without you.
“Can we not get a divorce?”
His voice got softer, almost pleading.
But I found it laughable, my eyes getting cold. “David,” I said coldly, “you really have a vivid imagination.”
