Chapter 5
When I woke up the next morning, Trevor had flooded my phone with
messages.
I had deleted WhatsApp but forgot to block his number. He sounded drunk. His messages were slurred and emotional.
‘Are you seriously ignoring me? Do you even know who I am?
“You’ll regret this! Even if you beg, I’ll never forgive you!
“Why won’t you answer? Don’t you care that I didn’t go home?
“Chloe, are you okay? Please just reply…”
I didn’t bother reading the rest. I calmly looked away, grabbed the prepared documents, and headed to the hospital.
Before the surgery, Trevor suddenly called. The ringtone sounded rapidly and panic–stricken like he had found out something.
I stayed still, letting the phone ring again and again until the nurse finally called
my name.
- he. That was when I shut it off.

Frustrated, he ran his fingers through his hair and stared at the phone, but all he got were busy signals.
His chest tightened. He threw on a jacket and dashed outside.
Emma, who always kept an eye on his mood, noticed right away. She followed him. But by the time she got to the door, his car was already
gone.
She stomped in frustration, yelling loudly after him.
Trevor didn’t hear a word. He kept driving while placing an order for steak, flowers, and jewelry, then headed home in a rush.
But when he walked in, the house was empty. The hope that had been growing inside him suddenly crashed.
Still, he told himself Chloe was probably just working. He figured he’d fix up the place a bit and tell her everything when she came back.
She had always been patient and rarely got mad. He believed if he apologized, she would forgive him. Feeling reassured, he started setting things up.
But soon, he realized no matter how he tried to make the place look better, it still looked shabby.
Trevor stopped. All he could see was old furniture and cracked paint. Then, his eyes landed on a tiny shirt hanging on the balcony. It was once beautiful but is now stained.
His chest ached, and a heavy sadness settled over him. At last, he understood what Chloe must have gone through.
Trevor kept his head down. Then, the doorbell suddenly rang. He jumped
